A true Democrat in word and action

President Festus Mogae will always be remembered as a leader of principle, dignity, and quiet strength — a man true to his words.

His presidency reflected a deep commitment to democratic governance, social progress, and advancing gender justice in Botswana.

As a respected ally of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), he supported efforts that promoted inclusive development, human dignity, and women’s empowerment. During his leadership, women occupied a significant share of senior public positions, and his government helped create space for greater representation and leadership.

The FES holds Former President Mogae close to its heart for his enduring contribution to gender justice, economic advancement and democracy in Botswana and beyond. To mark the 75th anniversary of the FES, then President Mogae travelled to Germany and celebrated shared democratic values with the then German President, Johannes Rau, a social democrat.

We honour the legacy of President Festus Mogae with gratitude and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and the people of Botswana.

Rest in peace, Rre Mogae.

For the first time in the History of the World Athletics Relays the event was held on the African continent. Thanks to Botswana and all the people involved in the preparation and implementation for giving us this celebration of excellent sport, fairness and joy.
The German🇩🇪 team was happy to go home with four qualifications and they cheered winning a bronze medal.

Congratulations to the Botswana🇧🇼 team for winning the 4x400 race at the very end. What a fairytale finale! Everyone cheered, no matter which nationality. That is what sport does: it brings us all together to enjoy exceptional dedication and team spirit.

On 15th-17th April 2026, the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) organized a National Assistance Workshop for Botswana, in the framework of Council Decision (CFSP) 2025/442.
The event was organized jointly with the German nationally funded project "Enhancing Export Control Capacity for Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004)".

The workshop was a continuation of the already existing cooperation between Germany and Botswana in the field of export control of fi****ms, now extended also to biological, nuclear and chemical weapons.
In a world shaken by conflicts and war these topics are of utmost importance, as Ambassador Gabriela Bennemann stressed in her address to the participants.

Participants also studied the reporting obligations and national reporting mechanisms tied to arms trading and arms trade control.
