𝙊𝙉𝙀 𝙈𝙄𝙉𝙄𝙎𝙏𝙍𝙔, 𝙊𝙉𝙀 𝙏𝙀𝘼𝙈, 𝙈𝙊𝙑𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙏𝙊𝙂𝙀𝙏𝙃𝙀𝙍

The Ministry of Minerals and Energy (MME) successfully hosted its 2026 MME Annual Sports Games this past weekend under the theme, “One Ministry, One Team, Moving Together Towards Excellence.” The event brought together MME departments, parastatals and companies to promote unity, teamwork, wellness and stronger working relationships.

Officially opening the Games, the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo praised the strong participation, which surpassed the 2025 games and reminded participants that every victory is a victory for the entire MME family. She encouraged everyone to support one another and remain committed to serving Botswana.

In his welcome remarks MME Permanent Secretary, Mr Donald Gaetsaloe thanked the organisers for providing medical services and health screening throughout the two days of the games. He highlighted the importance of the event in refreshing staff, strengthening relationships and preparing employees to return to work with renewed energy.

Congratulations to all the winners and every participant who proudly carried the MME name to celebrate teamwork, unity and love while inspiring the Ministry to improve service delivery.

SCATEC FOCUSES ON SKILLS DEVELOPMENT TO TACKLE YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

The Scatec ASA Executive Vice President and General Manager (EVP & GM) for Sub-Saharan Africa, Mr Alberto Gambacorta said the Mmadinare 100MW solar PV project employed over 1000 people during construction and created opportunities for local businesses and skills development. He explained that 686 people worked for the first phase while 515 people carried it through its phase two.

Gambacorta highlighted that the impact that the project brought went beyond employment, with local businesses benefiting from opportunities in security, transport, supply of materials, catering and accommodation. "Men and women from Serowe, Bobirwa and Selebi Phikwe did not just build the power plant but built skills, households and futures that they will carry with them," he said.

He added that Scatec is now implementing skills development programme in partnership with Humana People to People, a local based NGO which will enable them to impart renewable energy skills to the youth in Botswana. He said they are proof that a project of this scale can vitalise the economy around it.

Since October 2025, Scatec empowered communities living closest to their sites through computer training, marketing courses, agriculture training alongside gender-based violence as well as harassment and HIV-AIDS awareness campaigns that speak to the well-being of the community. The company has also supported schools and healthcare facilities in communities around it.

𝗕𝗢𝗧𝗦𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗔 𝗔𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗚𝗬 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗦𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗝𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗬

The 28th August 2026 marked a very defining milestone for Botswana’s energy transformation journey as the Minister of Minerals and Energy Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo launched Botswana’s first large scale renewable energy project.

The Mmadinare 100MW solar PV plant is among the renewable energy projects lined up in the Integrated Resource Plan for electricity (IRP); the country’s electricity generation plan that aims to increase the contribution of renewable energy sources from 2% to atleast 50% of the national power supply by 2030.

This ambitious target is fast becoming a reality, with the Mmadinare solar cluster, and other solar projects in the country already supplying more than 209 MW of clean electricity, or about 30% of the country's daytime power supply.

When officially opening the Mmadinare 100MW solar power plant, Honourable Minister Kenewendo indicated that the project represents more than an addition to Botswana’s generation capacity but is a tangible demonstration of commitment to strengthening energy security, diversifying energy mix and accelerating the transition towards a cleaner energy future. She said central to the commitment is the expansion of solar energy, which forms a cornerstone of Botswana’s renewable energy roadmap to 2030.

She said as Botswana transition to the new energy mix, the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) remains the foundational framework guiding Botswana’s journey towards a cleaner, more reliable, and environmentally responsible energy system, one that balances energy security, economic growth and environmental protection. She emphasised that Botswana is laying the foundation for a more sustainable and dynamic economy, where reliable energy is essential to driving socio-economic growth, attracting investment for industrialisation, enabling enterprises to thrive, creating employment, accelerating Botswana’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, while reducing dependence on imported electricity and retaining greater value within the domestic economy.

Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening energy security, expanding renewable energy and ensuring that energy investments create meaningful economic opportunities for Batswana.

𝗕𝗢𝗧𝗦𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗔 𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗙 𝗔𝗦 𝗔 𝗡𝗘𝗧 𝗣𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗢𝗡

Botswana is reducing her dependence on imported electricity as local generation improves, with the 100MW Mmadinare Solar PV Cluster plant now fully operational.

When officially opening the plant recently, the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo highlighted that the increased generation capacity is improving electricity stability, strengthening energy security, attracting investment and creating the potential for Botswana to become a net electricity exporter in the region. The Minister said Botswana’s electricity supply has improved since Morupule B Power Station’s four units became fully operational. She also highlighted that the 100MW Jwaneng solar PV cluster and Morupule A are also operational, which have drastically reduced Botswana’s electricity importation. She described the development as an important step towards a more stable power supply.

The member of Parliament for Mmadinare and Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Honourable Ketlhalefile FC Motshegwa indicated that the project is particularly significant because Botswana has abundant solar resources with tremendous solar generation potential, ranking among the countries with the highest levels of solar radiation in the world. He said by leveraging this resource, Botswana has a unique opportunity to transition to a sustainable energy mix and position herself as a net electricity exporter within the region.

In his remarks the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr David Kgoboko reported that the Mmadinare 100MW solar PV plant has already generated more than 243, 288MWh of electricity since commissioning, helping supplement local generation and reduce Botswana’s dependence on expensive electricity imports from the Southern African Power Pool. He said the plant has maintained availability and reliability averaging above 99%, describing its performance as a testament to the quality of the facility and the value of partnerships between BPC, government and private investors.

The project has been financed, developed and constructed by Scatec, who, as the Independent Power Producer, will also be responsible for its operation and maintenance under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with BPC as the offtaker.

MMADINARE COMMUNITY THANKED FOR HOSTING MEGA SOLAR PV PLANT

The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo today addressed a Kgotla meeting in Mmadinare to pass Government’s gratitude to the community for playing a critical role in supporting the country’s efforts to achieve self sufficiency in electricity and increase the share of electricity generated from renewable sources.

Mmadinare hosts a 100MW solar PV plant, situated on a 275 hectare plot at Phokoje lands in Mmadinare. The power plant is in commercial operation and is already feeding 100MW of solar powered electricity into the national grid.

Kenewendo said the 100MW generated at the Mmadinare solar PV plant has “transformed generation quantities,” in that it augments the 500MW coal thermal power produced at the four units of Morupule B power station, leading to a significant improvement in the electricity supply situation. Due to this enhanced national capacity, the country is now able to export excess power to the Southern African region during off-peak periods.

Kenewendo said the solar PV project and the successful rehabilitation of Morupule B has had other spinoffs, including supporting the growth of Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises and reducing the cost of importing power. She encouraged the community to continue taking care of electricity infrastructure for them to continue reading benefits.

Responding to concerns by some residents about unavailability of electricity in certain parts of the village, Minister Kenewendo assured them that Mmadinare is among the villages identified for the electricity network extension project.

Morupule Coal Mine yesterday, Thursday 27 August 2026, hosted the Honourable Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, for a Ministerial Visit focused on the Citizen Economic Empowerment Programme (CEEP) and the mine’s citizen business partners.

Held under the theme “𝑴𝒐𝒕𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝑶𝒂 𝑲𝒈𝒐𝒏𝒂” the visit provided a first-hand opportunity to see how citizen-owned enterprises are being integrated into Morupule Coal Mine’s supply and value chains while receiving structured support to grow their businesses.

The event showcased the tangible progress of MCM’s Citizen Economic Empowerment Programme (CEEP), following the Minister’s previous visit in April 2025, where she challenged the operation to demonstrate real progress in jobs, skills and enterprise growth through its Citizen Economic Empowerment Programme (CEEP).

Moving beyond traditional procurement, the programme actively integrates Batswana enterprise owners directly into the mine’s core supply and value chains.

Speaking on the impact of the programme, MCM Chief Executive Officer Edwin Elias said developing a strong base of citizen suppliers creates a more resilient mine while translating national policy into meaningful and lasting opportunities for Batswana.

He emphasised that CEEP goes beyond procurement, with participating businesses receiving support in areas such as capacity building, mentorship, export readiness, intellectual property, industry standards and market access.

“The goal is to help local companies grow beyond traditional mine contracts and compete in wider regional and international markets,” Mr Elias emphasised.

In her address, Minister Kenewendo commended Morupule Coal Mine for using CEEP to promote local business development, employment and industrialisation.

She also highlighted the strategic importance of the mine to Botswana’s energy security, noting that a reliable coal supply remains essential as the country works towards greater energy self-sufficiency and ultimately becoming a net exporter of electricity.

She further applauded Morupule Coal Mine for reaching an impressive 25-year milestone without a single fatality, stressing that a zero-harm safety culture should be the standard across all mineral licence holders.

Minister Kenewendo urged Morupule Coal Mine to sustain and deepen the programme, while encouraging participating businesses to continue building their capacity and pursue opportunities beyond the mine.
