GABORONE CITY COUNCIL PARTNERS WITH TAFISA TO ADVANCE THE GLOBAL ACTIVE CITY INITIATIVE

In preparation for Gaborone’s journey towards becoming a Global Active City, Gaborone City Council (GCC), in partnership with TAFISA, recently participated in a two-day workshop aimed at equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and practical tools necessary to promote physical activity and active living across the city.

The workshop focused on identifying barriers to an active lifestyle and exploring practical solutions to address them. These include inadequate or unsafe pedestrian walkways, limited recreational facilities, accessibility challenges, safety concerns and other factors that may discourage residents from engaging in regular physical activity.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from various sectors, including GCC employees representing different portfolios, the Office of the District Commissioner, Ward Development Committees (WDCs), Councillors, Health Coordinators and local sports partners.

The initiative underscores the importance of a collaborative, multi-sectoral approach in creating an active city. Through strengthened partnerships and coordinated efforts, Gaborone aims to foster an inclusive and accessible urban environment that encourages residents to walk, cycle, exercise, play and participate in physical activities as part of their daily lives.

This initiative reflects Gaborone City Council’s commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles, enhancing residents’ wellbeing and building a city for all.

THE OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT COMMISIONER STRENGTHEN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS THROUGH CAPACITY-BUILDING TRAINING

The Office of the District Commissioner has commenced a two-day workshop aimed at imparting knowledge and skills to improve disaster preparedness and response.

The training aims to equip district leaders, Members of Parliament, Honourable Councillors, Court Presidents, and Ward Development Committee Chairpersons with a clear understanding of how disaster management works in Botswana. These leaders are closest to the people, making them key partners in disaster preparedness, early warning, and response efforts.

The session underscored that disaster management is a shared responsibility. When leaders understand the system, communities are better informed, better prepared, and better protected.
