MAIN MALL CLEAN-UP REINFORCES GABORONE’S TOURISM APPEAL

Gaborone City Council (GCC) joined the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in a clean-up campaign at Main Mall, marking one year since the launch of the Gaborone City Tourism Initiative.
City Mayor His Worship Oarabile Motlaleng applauded the Ministry for choosing Main Mall, emphasising that as Botswana’s capital and national heart, Gaborone must remain clean, safe, attractive and habitable.

The Mayor described Main Mall as more than a commercial centre, noting that “it is a cultural and historical landmark that tells part of Botswana’s story.”

Acting Permanent Secretary Ms Neo Sebolao highlighted that tourism is not only about attracting visitors, but also about creating destinations that people want to experience, explore and return to.
She emphasised that a clean city is a tourism asset, making the upkeep of beautiful Gaborone a shared responsibility.

The initiative brought together Government departments, the business community and other stakeholders operating in and around Main Mall, reinforcing the message that a clean, vibrant and tourism-ready Gaborone is everyone’s responsibility.

GCC INDUCTS NEWLY ELECTED WARD DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Gaborone City Council (GCC) has conducted an induction workshop for newly elected Ward Development Committee (WDC) members, aimed at equipping them with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to effectively discharge their responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to community development.

The workshop focused on key areas including good governance, financial and asset management, planning, record keeping and effective stakeholder collaboration. It also emphasised teamwork, Botho and the importance of establishing sustainable income-generating initiatives to support community development.

Welcoming participants, Kgosi Kenneth Thari congratulated the newly elected WDC members on their election, describing it as a reflection of the trust and confidence that their respective communities have placed in them. He urged the members to embrace their responsibilities with commitment, diligence and a strong sense of service.

Kgosi Thari further underscored the importance of teamwork and Botho, noting that unity, mutual respect and collaboration are essential to achieving meaningful and sustainable community development.

The Deputy Mayor Hon. Mankie Sekete urged WDC members to shift their focus from elections to service delivery. Hon Sekete emphasised that WDCs must be organised, accountable and development-oriented, working closely with communities to identify challenges, mobilise residents and transform ideas into tangible development initiatives.

Acting Deputy Town Clerk - Operations, Mr Patrick Oleseng encouraged WDC members to translate the trust bestowed upon them by their communities into meaningful development outcomes.
Mr Oleseng highlighted the importance of good governance, accountability and a clear understanding of the role of WDCs in advancing community development. He noted that National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12), the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) and the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach should guide WDC efforts towards improved service delivery, enhanced economic opportunities and the development of resilient communities.
Chief of Social and Community Development, Ms Kopano Poroga, outlined the key objectives of the induction workshop, which included corruption prevention, financial management, asset management, relations with political leaders and public servants, collaboration with other ward committees, record keeping, planning and effective management.

Ms Poroga also emphasised the need for a mindset change among WDC members, encouraging them to move beyond identifying community challenges and take proactive steps towards developing sustainable projects that can generate income, empower residents and contribute to the socio-economic development of their communities.

The two days induction workshop provided newly elected WDC members with essential knowledge and practical guidance to enable them to effectively execute their mandate. The programme further reinforced the importance of accountable leadership, community participation, teamwork and sustainable development in strengthening service delivery at ward level.

Let’s roll up our sleeves for litter picking and waste collection as we work together to keep Gaborone clean, beautiful and welcoming.

THE MAYOR STROLLS TOWARDS GREENER CITIES

Gaborone took a step towards becoming a greener, more resilient and sustainable city as the Mayor’s Green Cities Drive Walk brought together community members, government representatives, development partners and other stakeholders for a walk from Old Naledi to Village Park.

The Minister of International Relations, Hon. Phenyo Butale, commended Gaborone City Council, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), development partners and communities for organising the initiative. Hon. Butale stated that “a clean city is a more resilient city,” emphasising that responsible citizens are essential partners in building sustainable communities. He noted that a green economy can contribute significantly to Botswana’s economic transformation, urging businesses to take responsibility for their environmental footprint. He called on everyone to renew their commitment to building not only a greener Gaborone, but a cleaner and more sustainable Botswana.

The Mayor of Gaborone, His Worship Oarabile Motlaleng, said the walk was more than just a journey from one place to another. It showed shared commitment to building a greener, stronger and more sustainable Gaborone. He highlighted the importance of working together to address climate change and noted that the Green Cities Initiative, supported by the FAO of the United Nations, aim to improve green spaces and promote sustainable urban food production. The Mayor reminded everyone that building a greener city is a shared responsibility and that caring for our environment should be part of our everyday lives.

Delivering his remarks, Kgosi Oageng Mosole welcomed all participants and appreciated them for being part of the important initiative. He commended the public for turning up in large numbers, highlighting their support and commitment towards building a greener and more sustainable city.

In attendance was Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO) contry representative Mr Patrice Talla and United Nation resident coordinator Wenyan Yang.
