The Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI) appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Bodies and State Enterprises yesterday, as part of the committee’s ongoing oversight assessment of state-owned enterprises.

During the session, the committee raised concerns about the slow growth of the organisation and questioned why the institute remains focused mainly on the production of Foot and Mouth Disease vaccines instead of expanding into the production of other vaccines. Members also asked what measures the institute is taking to diversify its operations.

The committee further questioned why the organisation is failing to meet the regional demand for Foot and Mouth Disease vaccines and urged BVI to take advantage of opportunities to increase production and pe*****te both the regional and broader African markets.

In addition, the committee advised the institute to draw lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic by diversifying its vaccine production portfolio and expanding its manufacturing capacity.

Banyana (PTY) LTD appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Bodies and State Enterprises, yesterday as part of the committee’s ongoing oversight assessment on state-owned enterprises.

During the briefing, the committee reviewed the company’s land allocations, financial performance, lease agreements, and audited accounts before the entity was closed.

Committee members sought clarification on the transfer of Banyana Farms to the government, including the costs involved in the process. They also raised concerns over alleged controversial allocations and questioned whether young people were benefiting from the allocations made by the organisation.

The committee further requested an explanation for delays in lease rentals, which have affected cash flow, and asked about the accounting systems and operational frameworks that were in place to guide the company’s activities and overall performance.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Statutory Bodies and State Enterprises yesterday examined Selebi-Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU), the body established specifically to drive the region's economic recovery. The committee questioned SPEDU on the progress of its diversification programmes and whether its efforts to attract investment to the area are producing real results.

The committee also examined governance, project implementation, infrastructure development and the utilisation of government resources intended to transform Selebi-Phikwe into an alternative economic hub. The examination highlighted concerns about slow investment uptake, limited employment opportunities and delays in delivering key projects.

Members of the committee stressed the need for SPEDU to accelerate investment promotion and implement sustainable economic initiatives capable of restoring economic activity and improving livelihoods in the region.

BOMRA APPEARED BEFORE PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE

The Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BOMRA) yesterday appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Bodies and State Enterprises as part of the committee’s ongoing oversight examinations of state-owned enterprises.

The session focused on the authority’s financial performance, management of medicine pricing, delivery of medicines, and medicine shortages, among other issues.

Members of the committee questioned the organisation on progress made in developing a traditional medicine regulatory framework and the national support required to advance it effectively.

The committee also expressed concern over the challenges posed by unregistered products and sought clarity on how the authority is addressing these challenges, as well as the strategies in place to curb them.

Furthermore, the committee encouraged the organisation to protect Batswana by managing and controlling the price of medicines during the current medicine shortage crisis.
