The Botswana Police Service (BPS), through its Gender and Child Protection Branch, yesterday (30/05/2026), facilitated a workshop on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) organised by the Central Bank Union. The workshop was conducted simultaneously for participants at the Bank's branches in Gaborone and Francistown.

During the workshop, presenters shared the 2024/2025 annual GBV crime analysis and delivered presentations on various topics, including the definition of GBV, legal frameworks and legislative responses to GBV, offences associated with GBV and key GBV indicators.

The presenters highlighted the Botswana Police Service's response and intervention strategies, emphasizing professionalism, improved response and handling of GBV-related cases, the integration of the child-friendly policing concept and the establishment of victim-friendly spaces at police stations.
They also raised concern over the increasing prevalence of technology-facilitated GBV, as well as the persistent challenges of underreporting and delayed reporting of cases, particularly those involving minors.

The presenters called upon union leadership and members to recognize their responsibility in reporting incidents of gender-based violence and matters affecting children. They emphasized that timely reporting is critical in ensuring the protection of victims, facilitating effective investigations and promoting access to justice.

The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen awareness, prevention, and collective action against gender-based violence while encouraging greater collaboration between law enforcement agencies, institutions and communities in safeguarding vulnerable members of society.

The Special Support Group (SSG) today 29/05/2026, gave a heartfelt send-off to Ms. Maretha Martha Sakana following her retirement after more than 30 years of dedicated service.

Ms. Sakana, who retired on 31st March 2025, joined the SSG on 7th May 1990 as an office cleaner before rising to become a respected cook within the organisation.

The colourful retirement celebration was led by Commander SSG, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Godfrey Phonchi, accompanied by his deputies, Assistant Commissioner of Police Luke Motokwane and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dirang Ntibi.

Family members, friends and SSG officers gathered to honour Ms. Sakana for her commitment, loyalty and selfless service throughout the years.

Speaking at the Ceremony, Assistant Commissioner Ntibi, praised Ms. Sakana for the role she played within the SSG family. โ€œYour kindness, dedication and hard work inspired us all. Your legacy will remain in our hearts and minds, and we will forever cherish the memories we shared with you,โ€ he said.

Speaking with composure and warmth, Ms Sakana described her journey as one shaped by discipline, resilience, and a deep commitment to duty.

She noted that her time in service had been โ€œa shared mission of purpose,โ€ where every challenge encountered became a lesson and every success a collective achievement. She extended heartfelt appreciation to her colleagues and leadership, saying their cooperation and professionalism had made even the most demanding assignments bearable.

She further acknowledged mentors and supervisors who guided her development, adding that their influence had left an enduring mark on her professional character. In a reflective tone, she encouraged those still in service to uphold integrity, discipline, and compassion, emphasising that public duty demands both strength and humility.

She also reminded attendees that retirement should not be viewed as an ending, but rather โ€œa dignified transition into a new chapter of life and contribution.โ€

The ceremony ended with emotional tributes and well wishes as colleagues celebrated the remarkable journey of one of SSGโ€™s longest serving members.

Law Enforcement Agencies from Botswana and Namibia, have concluded a five-day bilateral working session today (29/05/2026) in Gaborone, aimed at strengthening efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking between the two countries.

The meeting focused on developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and a Joint Drug Strategy to improve cooperation, intelligence sharing, border security and coordinated law enforcement operations between the two countries.

The engagement follows the formalisation of a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) on Police Cooperation between the two countries during the 2nd Session of the Bi-National Commission held on 10 October 2025 in Windhoek, Namibia.

Botswana was represented by Botswana Police Service (BPS), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) and Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS).

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the BPS Director of Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Victor Mabina, said the meeting had shifted from commitment to concrete action against transnational organised crime.

He highlighted agreed measures to disrupt drug supply networks, reduce demand, strengthen border policing, improve detection at ports of entry, and maximise shared resources and intelligence.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mabina commended the spirit of cooperation demonstrated by all participating agencies, saying the partnership would strengthen efforts to protect communities and safeguard the youth from the scourge of illicit drugs.

Delivering a vote of thanks on behalf of the Namibian Police Force, Commissioner Moritz N. Naruseb described the session as a major step in strengthening bilateral cooperation. He said the engagement would help maintain the shared border as a zone of peace, lawful movement and sustainable socio-economic activity.
