The Botswana National Front (BNF) has followed the public discussion concerning the legal proceedings involving its member and former Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Honourable Comrade Noah Salakae. The matter has understandably caused concern within the Party and among the wider public. It involves serious allegations against one of our members, as well as claims that an institution of the State has acted improperly.
Honourable Salakae remains entitled to the presumption of innocence, due process and the full protection of the law. Equally, claims that the proceedings are politically motivated or state-sponsored, together with allegations of harassment by the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC), are serious and should neither be treated as established fact without proper examination and scrutiny. The public is therefore urged to refrain from unsubstantiated assertions and speculation that may compromise the integrity of public institutions.
The Party is also deeply concerned by attempts to introduce tribal, ethnic or regional considerations into this matter. For the avoidance of doubt, there is no โWestern blockโ within the organization structures of the BNF, nor does the Party organize its members along tribal, ethnic or regional lines. The allegations concern individuals and must be determined on the evidence. Recasting an individual legal matter as a dispute between communities would distort the issues and undermine the national unity that Botswana has carefully preserved and for which the BNF has consistently advocated for.
The BNF recognizes that the matter has generated strong feelings among the public. We therefore appeal for restraint, so that public discussion does not descend into personal abuse, intimidation, defamation or communal suspicion. The Party will be guided by the evidence and by the outcomes of the legal and oversight processes.
