The Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Hon. Tiroeaone Ntsima, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Joel Ramaphoi, today met with the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the SPEDU , Mr. Tefo Modise Setlhare, in a meet-and-greet engagement following his appointment.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the Minister and Permanent Secretary to outline key expectations for the new leadership and reaffirm the Ministryโ€™s mandate, with particular emphasis on strengthening service delivery and ensuring that SPEDU effectively fulfils its responsibilities.

The Minister underscored the importance of SPEDU fully delivering on its core mandate of economic diversification, investment promotion, business development and employment creation within the SPEDU region.

The meeting further highlighted expectations and priorities that will position SPEDU to effectively fulfil its mandate and make a meaningful contribution to Botswanaโ€™s broader economic diversification and development agenda.

The Ministry expressed confidence that, under the new leadership, SPEDU will build on its mandate and strengthen its contribution towards creating a more diversified, inclusive and sustainable economy.

Cooperatives are economic bridges between aspiration and opportunity, ensuring that no community whether rural or urban is left behind in Botswanaโ€™s journey towards sustainable development and economic diversification.

This was said by the Assistant Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Hon. Baraatiwa Mathoothe, when addressing members of Serowe Marketing Cooperative Society Ltd recently.

Mathoothe said the government, through the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship, is committed to supporting cooperatives by creating a conducive environment that would enable them to fully participate in the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP).

He noted that cooperatives have an important role to play in broadening economic participation, creating employment opportunities and strengthening local enterprises.

The Assistant Minister encouraged cooperative societies to take advantage of available opportunities and work closely with government to contribute meaningfully to the countryโ€™s economic transformation and diversification agenda.

The Assistant Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Hon. Baratiwa Mathoothe, is expected to address members of the Serowe Marketing Cooperative Society Ltd Pty during their Annual General Meeting today at the Serowe Council Chambers.

The Serowe Marketing Cooperative Society is a member-owned business enterprise with interests in several commercial activities in Serowe and surrounding areas.

The cooperative owns the Serowe Marketing Co-op Filling Station, which operates as a Shell filling station in Serowe. It also owns a shop at Mabele a Podi, trading as SaveRite, as well as an agricultural shop in Serowe and a commercial complex that provides rental space.

The cooperative currently has 189 members and employs approximately 32 people, making it an important contributor to employment and economic activity in the area.

The address by Assistant Minister Mathoothe is expected to provide an opportunity for members to engage with government on issues affecting cooperatives, entrepreneurship, trade and the growth of member-owned businesses.

The Serowe Marketing Cooperative Society continues to play a role in providing essential goods and services while creating employment and business opportunities for members of the community.

The Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship Hon. Tiroeaone Ntsima has challenged Botswanaโ€™s state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to work collectively to deliver greater economic value and accelerate national economic growth.

Speaking during the Ministryโ€™s first-ever monthly engagement with Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Managing Directors of SOEs, Ntsima questioned whether Botswana is getting the full economic value from its institutions collectively.

The Minister acknowledged that many institutions are working hard but questioned if that translates into faster economic progress.

Ntsima called for a fundamental shift in the way SOEs and other economic institutions how they do business, urging them to operate as a coordinated system rather than as separate entities.

He said that, from 2026, the Ministry should be able to leverage the collective capabilities of its institutions to develop entrepreneurs, finance businesses, invest in industries, attract investors, open markets, establish standards, analyse trade, regulate competition, register companies, develop industrial locations and drive regional diversification.

The Ministerโ€™s message was clear: Botswanaโ€™s economic institutions must move beyond operating individually and begin measuring their success by the collective impact they have on economic growth, investment, entrepreneurship, industrialisation and job creation.
