NAHPA HIT THE STREETS AGAIN THIS MORNING

NAHPA was back on the streets this morning for another Wellness Walk as we continue our fight against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

This morning’s walk was made even more special by the participation of the University of Botswana Senior Recreational Club, Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital, and Mr Botswana.

Together, we are walking for better health, raising awareness about NCD prevention, and encouraging our communities to embrace active and healthier lifestyles.
Every step counts.

STRENGTHENING DISTRICT-LEVEL HIV PREVENTION COORDINATION IN BOTSWANA

NAHPA recently held a follow-up dialogue with District AIDS Coordinators (DACs), focused on strengthening leadership, coordination, accountability and performance across Botswana’s HIV response.

Opening the meeting, NAHPA Deputy National Coordinator, Ms Tebogo Hlabano, welcomed the appointment of Dr Neo Tapela as the new Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and reaffirmed NAHPA’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry’s leadership to advance health system transformation and strengthen service delivery.

The engagement reaffirmed a critical principle: the strength of Botswana’s national HIV response is reflected in the effectiveness of coordination and implementation at district and community level. DACs remain a vital link between national priorities and the communities we serve.

Key discussions focused on:
• Strengthening district leadership and coordination
• Making District Multi-Sectoral AIDS Committees (DMSACs) more functional, accountable and results-driven
• Expanding engagement with traditional leaders, local authorities, the private sector, civil society and communities
• Translating recommendations from the 2024 District-Level HIV Response Coordination and Management Review into concrete action and measurable improvements

With external HIV financing under increasing pressure, participants also underscored the need to strengthen sustainability through domestic resource mobilisation, stronger partnerships, service integration and innovative approaches that protect the gains Botswana has made.

The dialogue further reinforced the importance of responsible data management and compliance with the Data Protection Act, particularly in safeguarding sensitive health and HIV-related information.As NAHPA navigates a period of transition and transformation within the health sector, we remain committed to listening to district leaders and ensuring their experience, expertise and ideas help shape a stronger, more responsive system.

The next phase of Botswana’s HIV response demands strong leadership, innovation, collaboration and accountability. Together, we can build a district coordination system that is stronger, more responsive, more accountable and closer to the communities we serve.

NAHPA SOUTHERN DISTRICT COORDINATORS’ UPDATE MEETING HELD IN GABORONE
‎
‎NAHPA held a Southern District Coordinators (DAC) update meeting in Gaborone to review key district issues, including teenage pregnancy, low HIV testing uptake, commemorations and general logistics.
‎
‎The meeting emphasised coordinator wellness as an important factor to improved service delivery. Mr Edward Masukudu from Masego Mental Health Organization encouraged open-mindedness, positive community relationships, and a resilient mindset when navigating workplace uncertainties. Coordinators were reminded that valuing themselves, their work, and the communities they serve supports effective service delivery.

‎DACs were also encouraged to strengthen collaboration and alignment with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to improve coordination of mandates and activities across districts.

‎The meeting provided a platform to share experiences, address challenges, and strengthen collective efforts to better serve communities.

THE MONTH OF PRAYER OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

Today in Lobatse, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Honourable Dithapelo Keorapetse, officially launched Botswana’s annual Month of Prayer themed 'Let there be Life'.

In a powerful address, Honourable Keorapetse urged citizens to pair their faith with healthy, responsible choices to guide daily actions and decisions.He honored the historic pioneers of the fight against HIV/AIDS, noting that the baton is now held by us all and by dedicated organizations like NAHPA and BOCHAIP, who continue to lead the charge for healthier communities.

The church unified in voice and spirit, lifting up prayers for Botswana’s national leadership, The youth of the nation and for Healing and transformation over current social ills. As the event concluded, a powerful reminder echoed through the congregation that "If there is a man to pray, there is a God to answer."
