The Ministry of Health continues to engage communities on National Health Insurance (NHI) following adoption of the NHI Policy by Parliament recently. This morning, the NHI Secretariat addressed villages Khawa, Malatswai, Marapong and Grootlaagte on the proposed Health Insurance.

The attendants across the different villages were briefed on what the National Health Insurance is, the NHI's proposed model, how the NHI Fund will be financed and the envisaged benefits to Batswana and residents once it is kickstarted.

Through these engagements, communities are given an opportunity to help shape the policy.

Tomorrow, engagements continue in Middlepits, Makaleng, New Xade and Serowe.

The Ministry of Health Transformation Team is engaging with the Palapye cluster today to hear their voices in shaping the new Health Strategy.

The team convened health stakeholders from the Sefhare, Mahalapye, Serowe, Palapye, Selibe-Phikwe and Mmadinare catchment areas for consultations on the development of the new strategy.

In her welcome remarks, the Acting Council Secretary for Primary Health Care in Palapye, Ms. Joyce Gabathusi, thanked participants for coming to provide input in developing a roadmap that will guide the achievement of national health goals. She highlighted that without role clarity, implementation efforts will get lost along the way.

Officially opening the workshop, the Senior Consultant for National Health Insurance Ms. Lydia Andries, said the workshop will enable the Ministry to develop a strategy that reflects realities on the ground. โ€œWe want to see your fingerprints and footprints in this strategy,โ€ she said.

Outlining the objectives of the workshop, the Transformation Coordinator, Mr. Nathaniel Tlhalerwa, said stakeholders were gathered to secure their buy-in and to share challenges and enablers in different health facilities.

The Ministry of Health has added eight (8) new ambulances to Governmentโ€™s emergency response fleet, strengthening efforts to ensure that citizens can access timely and reliable emergency medical services when they need them most.

Of the eight ambulances, six were officially handed over this morning to the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs for deployment to underserved areas. The ambulances will serve Okavango, Kweneng, Boteti, Tonota, Ghanzi and North West, bringing emergency response services closer to communities that need them most.

The remaining two ambulances will be deployed to Tsabong Primary Hospital and Goodhope Primary Hospital, further expanding emergency response capacity in these areas.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Minister of Health, Hon. Dr Stephen Modise, said the new ambulances will significantly enhance the speed and effectiveness of emergency response, helping to prevent avoidable deaths. He highlighted the importance of timely emergency care, particularly for women experiencing pregnancy and childbirth complications.

The Minister noted that improved access to emergency transport and faster response times will contribute to efforts to reduce maternal mortality and save lives across Botswana.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs received the ambulances on behalf of her Ministry and hailed the development as a positive one for all patients in the areas where the ambulances will be deployed.
