BOTSWANA HEIGHTENS SURVEILLANCE AMID EBOLA AND HANTAVIRUS CONCERNS
The Ministry of Health has intensified public health surveillance following recent Ebola outbreaks linked to the Bundibugyo strain in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, as well as growing global concern over Hantavirus cases associated with a South Atlantic cruise expedition. Although Botswana has not recorded any confirmed or suspected cases of either disease, health authorities caution that the country remains vulnerable due to regional travel and trade connections. In response, enhanced screening measures have been introduced at all points of entry, including mandatory health declarations for travelers arriving from affected areas.

The interview will explore Botswanaโ€™s preparedness to detect and respond to potential imported cases, ongoing public awareness efforts, and measures being implemented to protect public health.

Acting Minister of Health, Hon. Lawrence Ookeditse, expressed concern that children, some as young as 12 years, are already experimenting with to***co products. Speaking at the launch of the Botswana To***co Industry Interference Index Report in Gaborone today, Minister Ookeditse called for intensified awareness campaigns to generate public outrage over the growing acceptance of to***co use, particularly va**ng, among schoolchildren.

Hon. Ookeditse urged all Batswana to unite to break the cycle of to***co addiction that endangers the future of the youth of this country.

Today in Gaborone, Ministry of Health met with stakeholders to introduce the Data-to-policy initiative (D2P). When welcoming participants, Director of Health Policy Development, Monitoring & Evaluation Ms Judith Nawa said that for evidence-based decision-making to take place, it requires the health sector as a collective, not just Ministry of Health. Ms Nawa appealed to the participants saying their involvement is critical to the success of the project, since collaboration between policy makers, researchers, implementors and partners is essential for influencing decision making.

The Data-to-policy project aims to strengthen translation of research, findings and routine data into policy programs that effectively affect the nationโ€™s priorities and the publicโ€™s needs.

In attendance were representatives from UNFPA, University of Botswana, National Planning Commission, Boitekanelo College, Botswana Harvard Partnership, CDC Botswana and BUMMHI. The initiative is sponsored by Vital Strategies through World Health Organization Botswana. Zambia National Health Research Authority is providing technical assistance to Botswana.

The Ministry of Health, through the Department of Health Policy Development, Monitoring and Evaluation (HPDME) Health Statistics Unit started a five-day Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop to build a pool of national and sub-national trainers who will cascade Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) training to healthcare workers across health facilities. The TOT approach will support sustainability, standardization, and nationwide scale-up of MCCD capacity-building efforts.

The workshop targeted programme officers at the national level and Medical certifiers from the six health districts targeted for the Bloomberg Philanthropies Data for Health Initiative (D4H) Global Grants Program (GGP). The districts targeted are Gaborone, Mahalapye, Goodhope, Serowe, Kgatleng, and Francistown. WHO (World Health Organisation) will offer technical assistance and facilitate the training.
