Security enhanced in Letlhakane with new police station

The Vice President of the Republic of Botswana, His Honour Slumber Tsogwane has urged residents of Letlhakane and surrounding villages to work hand-in-hand with the police in the fight against crime as the police would not make it without community support.

Tsogwane said this during the official opening of New Letlhakane Police Station where he expressed concern about the increase of violent and intrusive crimes such as murder, r**e, defilement and home invasions among others.

“You need to actively participate in community policing and conduct researches on evolving crimes to keep yourselves updated”, His Honour Tsogwane encouraged the community.

He further indicated that the Government would continue to facilitate Botswana Police Service (BPS) with good infrastructure, modern technology and advance resources to help improve their service delivery.

“The New Letlhakane Police Station is a full fledged facility designed to offer comprehensive policing services to the satisfaction of local communities and customers therefore, I urge you to utilise it”, he added.

Commissioner of Police, Ms Dinah Marathe explained that Letlhakane and its policing area has continued to grow together with crime rates hence the need for another police station to relieve the old one. She indicated that the area provided services to areas such as Rakops, Mosu, Mopipi and Toromoja among others which were too many for one police station.

New Letlhakane Police Station consists of reception area, identification suite, interview room, child friendly centre, records management, custody suits among others. There are also thirty-six (36) houses for police officers which include twenty-eight (28) low-cost houses.

Ms Marathe stated that the facility have play grounds which would be open for use to both the police officers and the community.

MDS talks about Psychological Safety in the workplace

The Ministry of Defence and Security has organized a one-day wellness session for all its employees to take advantage of teachings from professionals in the field as a way of sensitizing mental health efforts.

Mental health can be described as a state of well being in which an individual can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and contribute to their zone of influence. It encompasses psychological and social well being affecting how people think, feel and behave. Mental health is therefore an integral part of our lives from childhood through adolescence and adulthood.
Granted, Psychological safety in the workplace is therefore a critical component in the wellbeing of an individual. Be that as it may, it is imperative for the employer to constantly engage its staff on issues such as these given that “Health is Wealth”.

In her welcome remarks, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence & Security Ms Boikobo Bolowe started by saying she is really impressed by the large turn up by officers, adding that it shows that just like HIV/AIDS everyone is affected. Bolowe said the large turn up is also an indication that there is buy in from management which is a welcome development. Adding that, as employees we are all called to deliver exceptional service, however DPS said one needs to be ‘mentally fit’ in order to deliver equitable service to the nation.

Colleagues, were urged to set their personal differences aside and find common ground when working together to avoid unnecessary conflict and encourage workmanship. They were further encouraged to have emotional intelligence in relation to things happening around them. Employees were further encouraged to use various techniques that have been implored for time immemorial such as the ‘conflict resolution technique’ which aims at resolving disputes constructively.

Maintaining good mental health is a crucial for overall wellbeing. Just as physical health requires attention, mental health also needs regular care and attention. Practices such as mindfulness, regular exercise, maintaining strong social connections and seeking professional help, when necessary, can contribute to mental well-being. MDS staff have been provided with free health screening on the following Blood sugar, Body Mass Index (BMI) and BP.
