Ministry of Finance Enhances NMES Reporting Capacity

The Ministry of Finance, through the Transformation Office, today hosted a training session aimed at strengthening performance measurement and reporting across its departments.
Held under the theme "Strengthening the Quality, Consistency and Accuracy of Departmental NMES Reporting," the session equipped participants with knowledge on performance management concepts, performance indicators, data sources, and reporting requirements under the National Monitoring and Evaluation System (NMES).
Speaking during the opening of the session, Manager Human Resources and Administration, Ms. Gaongalelwe Seetasewa, said the training was designed to address gaps identified during the review of departmental reports and improve the quality and consistency of submissions to the National Planning Commission.
She noted that the programme specifically targeted areas that have consistently emerged during report reviews and provides an opportunity for practical application and engagement with subject matter experts.
The training sought to enhance participants' understanding of the performance measurement framework, clarify the interpretation and application of departmental performance measures, and promote compliance and knowledge sharing across the Ministry.
Expected outcomes include improved interpretation and reporting of NMES performance information, enhanced quality and credibility of departmental data, preparation of comprehensive evidence-based performance reports, and consistent application of reporting standards. These improvements are expected to contribute to a stronger culture of performance management and accountability within the Ministry.

The Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) was honoured to participate in the Ngwato Land Board Strategic Retreat, where the Secretariat shared Botswana’s economic transformation agenda and engaged stakeholders on opportunities to unlock investment and accelerate economic growth.

The session highlighted BETP’s goal of accelerating Botswana’s journey to high-income status by 2036 through a private sector-led, execution-focused approach. Participants were taken through the programme’s progress, including the high-impact projects across sectors such as tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, mining, energy, and infrastructure that have the opportunity to bring transformative opportunities to those in the Central district.

The engagement also provided an opportunity for constructive dialogue on land administration, project facilitation, and ways to strengthen coordination between institutions to support investment, job creation, and economic diversification.

The discussions were highly interactive, with valuable contributions from Land Board officials, reflecting a shared commitment to finding practical solutions and ensuring Botswana remains open for business. The BETP team was also receptive to the various nuances and challenges faced by the Ngwato Land Board as the custodians of development in the Central area.

BETP extends its appreciation to Ngwato Land Board for the invitation and looks forward to continued collaboration in advancing Botswana’s transformation agenda and building a more diversified, competitive, and prosperous economy for all Batswana.

Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) Commemorates Inaugural International Financial Intelligence Unit Day

The Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) of Botswana today joined 180-member states of the Egmont Group in commemorating the inaugural International Financial Intelligence Unit Day. The commemoration follows the international conference held on 9 June 1995 in Brussels, Belgium, where the Egmont Group was established. This year's event was held under the theme, “From Intelligence to Impact: Positioning FIA as a Guardian of Financial Integrity.” Addressing attendees, Vice President and Minister of Finance, Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, said the theme could not have come at a better time, as it captures both an aspiration and an obligation. He noted that intelligence has value when it changes outcomes, information has value when it strengthens decisions, and analysis has value when it protects citizens, institutions, and economies. Vice President Gaolathe emphasised that the Government of Botswana recognise the FIA as a strategic institution in promoting financial stability, investor confidence, and economic development. He reaffirmed Government's commitment to ensuring that the Agency possesses the legal authority, operational independence, and resources necessary to effectively fulfil its mandate in accordance with international standards.

The commemoration underscores the FIA's critical role in safeguarding Botswana's financial system and strengthening the country's efforts to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and other financial crimes.
