The Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs began the week with a Motivational Monday session led by the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Gender Department, Ms. Thapelo Phuthego, under the theme โ€œWhat is Life?โ€

Her message focused on commitment, purpose, resilience, and personal growth. She emphasised that commitment reflects mental strength and requires consistency and determination, even when faced with challenges or unexpected circumstances.

Ms. Phuthego explained that life can be viewed from spiritual and philosophical perspectives, and that each individual has the responsibility to give their life meaning. She encouraged staff to embrace their uniqueness, recognize that everyone has their own path, and understand that purpose is created through personal choices and actions.

The session also highlighted three important aspects that sustain life:

1. Love and affection โ€“ which begins within the family;
2. The pursuit of knowledge โ€“ which promotes personal growth and innovation; and
3. Spirituality โ€“ which guides people toward knowing God and loving others.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Phuthego encouraged staff to find the intersection between their passion, talents, purpose, and profession by doing what they love, using their strengths, addressing community needs, and pursuing sustainable careers.

She stressed that aligning these four areas enables individuals to live purposefully, make meaningful contributions to society, and create positive impact in the service of youth, women, and communities across Botswana.

The Southern Africa Youth, Peace and Economic Development Summit (SAYPEDS 2026) was held this morning under the theme, โ€œ๐๐ž๐š๐œ๐ž, ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐ฒ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ: ๐„๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐š ๐’๐ž๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ˆ๐ง๐œ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐’๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ง ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š,โ€ bringing together young people, government representatives, diplomatic missions, development partners, civil society, the private sector and other stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting the regionโ€™s youth.

Speaking at the summit, Project Director Ambassador Letsweletse Ngwako said young people want to meaningfully participate in governance and need opportunities to be part of conversations that will shape the future of their countries.

He emphasised the importance of enhancing youth participation in peacebuilding and social cohesion initiatives, noting that young people continue to face challenges, including exclusion from important decision-making spaces where they could make a significant impact.

Ambassador Ngwako called on government to be more receptive to young people by creating opportunities for them to be heard, participate and take their rightful place at decision-making tables.

He said young people possess ideas, leadership, energy and lived experiences that should be recognised and incorporated into national development processes. He added that youth development is not always about financial resources, but also requires access to information, mentorship and networking opportunities.

Ngwako acknowledged that government cannot achieve youth development alone and called on civil society organisations, advocacy groups, the private sector and financial institutions, among other stakeholders, to contribute to the youth development agenda.

Ambassador Ngwako also encouraged young people to make use of the resources and opportunities available to them rather than waiting for the perfect moment. He cited SAYPEDS as an example, noting that the initiative was started without sponsors but was driven by a dream of promoting economic development, peace and prosperity for young people.

Giving her opening remarks, Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, Honourable Lesego Chombo, commended the organisers of the summit and young people who continue to pursue their aspirations despite challenging economic conditions. Minister Chombo emphasised the importance of tenacity and determination, noting that success does not always come instantly and that meaningful results often require patience and persistence.

Honourable Chombo noted that with Africa being the worldโ€™s youngest continent, with approximately 60 percent of its population below the age of 25, there is a significant responsibility on governments and institutions to ensure that young people are equipped with the knowledge, skills and opportunities necessary to contribute meaningfully to the development of their countries and communities.

Minister Chombo stated that government also seeks to strengthen the economy so that it can provide greater support to young people and their ideas.

She noted the target of ensuring that, by 2029, at least 35 percent of leadership and decision-making positions are occupied by young people.

Honourable Chombo further stated that the newly adopted National Youth Policy calls for youth to be mainstreamed into institutional recruitment and development processes, recognising that young people should not only be beneficiaries of policies, but also active participants in the institutions and decisions that shape their future.

The Ministry has also pursued stronger public-private partnerships, including collaborations with Lucara and Diacore, to refurbish and develop youth centres across the country. The centres are expected to serve as hubs for skills development, entrepreneurship, mentorship, innovation and civic engagement among young people.

For his part, Minister of International Relations, Honourable Dr Phenyo Butale, commended the organisers for convening a platform that brings together various stakeholders to discuss issues central to the future of the region. Honourable Dr Phenyo Butale described the summitโ€™s theme as both timely and significant, noting that peace, policy and prosperity are closely interconnected.

Minister Butale noted that as economies continue to evolve through digital transformation, technological innovation and changing labour-market demands, the skills required by employers and industries are also changing.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that education and skills-development systems remain responsive to the needs of modern economies, while urging young people to prepare themselves not only to participate in national economies, but also to take advantage of regional and global opportunities.

He also commended the inclusion of an exhibition component at the summit, noting that exhibitions provide young people with opportunities to discover services, products, entrepreneurship opportunities, institutions and networks that can contribute to their personal and professional development.

In closing, Minister Butale said the true measure of the summit would ultimately be determined by whether its recommendations are pursued, opportunities are created and young people experience meaningful and lasting change.

This afternoon, the Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, Honourable Lesego Chombo, met young people at Kgosi Mpe Junior Secondary School in Jwaneng as part of her youth engagement tour.

โ€œThere is no Botswana without you. You are going to be the innovators of Botswana, but what kind of innovators are you going to be?โ€

Minister Chombo reminded the learners that they are special and that Botswanaโ€™s future rests in their hands. Minister Chombo encouraged the young people to start building the Botswana they want to see by believing in themselves, knowing who they are and having confidence in their abilities.

Minister Chombo also reminded them that knowing themselves does not mean they cannot change. Change is a normal part of life, and what matters is choosing to change for the better.

The message was simple: trust yourself, believe in your potential and never forget that Botswana is you.
