Before we ask students to spend, perhaps we should first ask ourselves if we have done enough to ensure that they have what they are supposed to receive. First year Students are still struggling with FNB cards. Off Campus Students have 2 consecutive months receiving an allowance of P1770. Some Students have more than 2 months without receiving their allowances at all and yet Simply Piano becomes a priority!? Is this proof that we have an SRC that prioritizes Student entertainment over Student Welfare?

To be clear, this is not an argument against student entertainment. Students deserve recreation, social activities and a vibrant university experience, but an SRC must be judged by its priorities, particularly when students are facing pressing financial challenges. When students are still waiting for money they are entitled to receive, when some are receiving less than expected, and when first-years are struggling to access their allowances, it is legitimate to ask if WE HAVE AN SRC THAT PRIORITIZES STUDENT ENTERTAINMENT OVER STUDENT WELFARE. Leadership is not merely about organising events. Leadership is about identifying what matters most and acting accordingly

Before we ask students to buy tickets, let us first make sure they have the money they are supposed to have. Students need an SRC that fights for their welfare not one that becomes more efficient at asking them to spend while their legitimate concerns remain unresolved. The Piano can play but not when priorities are out of tune. The SRC must first deal with FNB Cards delays, it must account to missing allowances, help the students get what's theirs that's when we can go and enjoy the waters of immortality with money our pockets.

Let us act strategically

A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES BEGINS WITH ONE STEP

Defeat has a way of testing not just our strength, but our belief in ourselves and in each other. After a challenging outcome in the UB SRC elections, it would have been easy to retreat, to question our purpose, or to lose sight of the vision that brought us together. But instead, we chose something different we chose to gather, to reflect, and to rise.

At a simple but meaningful bonding lunch, Boniface Bashi Blancha Mabeo reminded us of a truth that often gets lost in moments of disappointment: the first loss does not define you. It introduces you. It reveals your character, your resilience, and your willingness to keep going when the path becomes uncertain.

What we experienced was not the end of a journey, but the beginning of one. A journey that will demand patience, growth, unity, and above all, courage. Every great movement, every impactful leader, and every lasting change has been shaped by moments like these moments where giving up seemed easier, but pushing forward mattered more.

This is our first step.
We walk forward not as individuals discouraged by defeat, but as a collective strengthened by it. We carry with us the lessons learned, the bonds reinforced, and the fire to come back better, wiser, and more determined.

The road ahead may be long, but we have already begun. And that, in itself, is victory.
