“PROTECT OUR CHILDREN”: RAKOPS RESIDENTS DEMAND ACTION

RAKOPS, 2 SEPTEMBER 2026: Residents of Rakops have called for urgent action to protect children and vulnerable people, raising concerns over child neglect, gender-based violence (GBV), alcohol abuse and delays in resolving child protection cases.

The concerns were raised during a Boteti District Council kgotla meeting, where residents also questioned the granting of bail to accused persons. They said some allegedly repeat offences while on bail, while their return to the community can create fear and tension for victims.Residents called on Government to review child protection laws and ensure that cases are handled more efficiently and victims are adequately protected.

Community Development and Social Services Committee Chairperson, Hon. Lamodimo Ditamara, urged parents, guardians and community members to take collective responsibility for protecting children.

“Protecting children is everyone’s responsibility. We must report abuse and act early when children are at risk.”

She also encouraged the community to embrace positive cultural practices that promote discipline, responsibility and respect.

Boteti District Council Deputy Council Secretary–Operations, Ms Ndidzi Molatole, urged residents to promote faithfulness in relationships to help reduce GBV and encouraged responsible alcohol use.

Meanwhile, Principal Social Welfare Officer I, Mr Gwisani Tubute, called for the revival of the Rakops Child Protection Committee, saying it is essential for identifying child protection concerns and coordinating community responses.

Boteti District Council reaffirmed its commitment to working with communities and stakeholders to address social challenges and build safer and healthier communities.

XERE RESIDENTS CALL FOR TIGHTER ALCOHOL CONTROLS AS CHILD PROTECTION CONCERNS GROW

XERE, 2 SEPTEMBER 2026: Residents of Xere have called for tighter controls on alcohol outlets, stronger parental responsibility and urgent action to protect children and vulnerable members of the community.

The concerns were raised during a Boteti District Council kgotla meeting held in Xere, where residents highlighted alcohol abuse, child neglect, gender-based violence (GBV) and other social challenges affecting families and community safety.

Residents appealed to Government to review and reduce the operating and trading hours of alcohol outlets, arguing that excessive alcohol consumption contributes to family problems and exposes children and vulnerable people to increased risks.

Community Development and Social Services Committee Chairperson, Hon. Lamodimo Ditamara, urged parents, guardians, community leaders and residents to take collective responsibility for protecting children. She encouraged residents to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect and to act early when children are at risk.

The community also called for stronger action against child neglect. It urged the revival of non-operational community development projects, which residents said could create livelihood opportunities and contribute to local economic development.

Boteti District Council Deputy Council Secretary–Operations, Ms Ndidzi Molatole, urged residents to resolve disputes peacefully through dialogue and reconciliation rather than allowing conflicts to escalate.

Principal Social Welfare Officer I, Mr Gwisani Tubute, called for the revival and strengthening of the Xere Child Protection Committee, saying an active committee is essential for identifying child protection concerns, coordinating community responses and ensuring that children receive appropriate protection and support.

Boteti District Council reaffirmed its commitment to working with communities, traditional leaders, Government departments and other stakeholders to tackle social challenges and build safer, healthier and more resilient communities.

KHUMAGA VILLAGE, 1 SEPTEMBER 2026: Boteti District Council has called on residents of Khumaga to strengthen community efforts to combat child abuse, gender-based violence (GBV) and other forms of violence affecting families and vulnerable people.

The call was made during a kgotla meeting held as part of the Council’s ongoing engagements on child protection, social protection and community welfare.Community Development and Social Services Committee Chairperson, Hon. Lamodimo Ditamara, urged parents, guardians, community leaders and residents to take collective responsibility for protecting children by reporting suspected abuse and addressing cases before they escalate.

Residents identified alcohol and drug abuse as major concerns, noting that substance abuse may contribute to GBV, child neglect and increased household poverty. They also raised concerns about the handling of child abuse and GBV cases, calling for responsible officials to treat such cases with the seriousness they deserve.

Boteti District Council Deputy Council Secretary–Operations, Ms Ndidzi Molatole, encouraged residents to practise anger management and peaceful conflict resolution to prevent disputes from escalating into violence.

Meanwhile, Mr Gwisani Tubute, Principal Social Welfare Officer I, urged the community to revive and strengthen the Child Protection Committee, while sensitising residents on its role and structure.

MOREOMAOTO VILLAGE, 1 SEPTEMBER 2026: Boteti District Council has called on residents of Moreomaoto to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse, gender-based violence (GBV) and other forms of violence affecting families and vulnerable members of the community.

The call was made during a kgotla meeting held as part of the Council’s ongoing community engagements on child protection, social protection and community welfare. Community Development and Social Services Committee Chairperson, Hon. Lamodimo Ditamara, urged parents, guardians, community leaders and residents to take collective responsibility for protecting children and vulnerable people by speaking out, reporting suspected abuse and seeking early intervention.

Residents raised concerns about the handling of child abuse and GBV cases, particularly the need for responsible officials to treat such cases with the seriousness they deserve. The community committed to working with relevant authorities to address these challenges.

Motopi | 31 August 2026: Residents of Motopi have been urged to take a stronger stand against child abuse, gender-based violence (GBV) and other forms of violence affecting families and vulnerable members of the community.

The call was made during a community engagement meeting held at the Motopi Kgotla, where the Boteti District Council engaged residents on child protection, social protection and community welfare.

Community Development and Social Services Committee Chairperson, Hon. Lamodimo Ditamara, emphasized that protecting children and vulnerable people requires collective responsibility. He encouraged parents, guardians, community leaders and residents to speak up, report suspected abuse and take action before situations escalate.

A key concern raised during the engagement was the under-reporting of child defilement cases, particularly where alleged perpetrators are family members or relatives. Residents highlighted the difficulties that families may face when reporting cases involving people close to them.

The discussion also focused on the importance of managing conflict before it develops into violence. Boteti District Council Deputy Council Secretary–Operations, Ms Ndidzi Molatole, encouraged residents to practice anger management and peaceful conflict resolution, noting that effective management of anger and disputes can help reduce violence within families and communities.

In addition to child protection and GBV, the Council provided an update on social protection services. Residents were informed that the contracts with SmartSwitch and MyZaka have ended, and that a new service provider has been procured. Consultations are currently underway to ensure that beneficiaries receive the necessary information and support during the transition.

PROTECT. REPORT. ACT: BOTETI DISTRICT COUNCIL LEADS THE CALL FOR SAFER COMMUNITIES

Makalamabedi | 31 August 2026: Boteti District Council has intensified community engagement on child protection, social protection and gender-based violence (GBV), calling on residents to take collective action to protect children and vulnerable members of society.

Speaking at the Makalamabedi Kgotla, Community Development and Social Services Committee Chairperson Hon. Lamodimo Ditamara urged parents, guardians, leaders and the public to speak up, report abuse and take early action to prevent harm.

The Boteti District Council Deputy Council Secretary–Operations, Ms Ndidzi Molatole, encouraged residents to practice anger management and peaceful conflict resolution as important ways to reduce disputes and prevent situations that could escalate into violence.

Residents also raised concerns about parental access disputes and delays in resolving family-related cases, noting that prolonged disputes can create tensions within families and contribute to challenges such as GBV.

The Council further updated residents on social protection payments, informing them that the SmartSwitch and MyZaka contracts have ended and that a new service provider has been procured. Consultations are underway to ensure beneficiaries are informed and supported throughout the transition.
