Botswana Railways recently sent a team of engineers and technicians to Johannesburg, South Africa to inspect a wheel lathe machine that has been refurbished and modernised.

A wheel lathe is one of the most important tools in the railway workshop. It trims and reshapes train wheels so they run smoothly and safely on the tracks. The team checked how well the machine was performing after the upgrades and ran a test operation to make sure everything was working as it should.

The machine had been out of service for some time and needed a major upgrade. Technicians installed modern electrical systems and updated the control software to bring it up to current industry standards. This project is part of Botswana Railways’ efforts to revive its maintenance capacity and run trains more efficiently to keep up with growing demand.

Once the machine arrives back in Botswana by the end of June 2026, it will help improve the safety, reliability, and overall performance of train operations across the network.

In support of ongoing efforts to curb cattle movement between Kgatleng and Mahalapye District and strengthen measures aimed at preventing the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, Botswana Railways has successfully installed a cattle grid at the Dibete Veterinary Fence.

The installation forms part of broader interventions to reinforce zonal separation and restrict livestock movement across affected areas, contributing to efforts to keep Zone 10 free from infection and safeguard the district’s livestock sector and livelihoods.

INFRASTRUCTURE PARTNER ANNOUNCEMENT 🚂🇧🇼

We are proud to confirm that Botswana Railways will be participating at Trade Up North 2026 on the 23rd of July in Francistown!

🎤 Mr. Okitanye Gaogane, Chief Executive Officer, Botswana Railways
Topic: "Logistics and Infrastructure for Coal and Soda Ash"

Why every SME must hear this:
Coal from Morupule. Soda ash from BOTASH. Nothing moves to market without rail.

Government stands firm and committed in mining diversification and export growth. But diversification means tons. Millions of tons. And tons need tracks, wagons, and ports.

Mr. Gaogane will cover:
✅ Morupule–Mosetse rail – timelines, capacity, SME opportunities in construction & maintenance
✅ Coal to Walvis Bay & beyond – Botswana’s plan to become a regional coal exporter
✅ Soda Ash logistics – how BOTASH gets to market and what support services are needed
✅ Future corridors – Mmamabula - Lephalale, Kazungula Bridge, SADC rail integration

If you’re in: Transport, logistics, fuel supply, construction, security, manufacturing, catering, or maintenance rail expansion = your next contract.

This address will be delivered before His Excellency Advocate Duma Gideon Boko who officially opens Trade Up North 10th Anniversary.
