The National Women's Commission

The National Women's Commission Established in 1982, the National Women's Commission of Belize (NWC) serves as an advisory body to the Government on issues relating to women.

Established in 1982, the National Women’s Commission of Belize (NWC) serves as an advisory body to the Government on issues affecting gender equality, equity and womens’ empowerment. Its establishment was a part of an overall effort of the Government to meet a series of international commitments, commencing in 1975 when Belize participated in the First World Conference on Women, to improve the sit

uation of the nation's women and girls. In 1990, Belize both signed and ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). This international 'Bill of Rights' for women sets standards and principles for the enjoyment of all civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights. The National Women's Commission is a body of individual women and men appointed by the Government to function as a strategic guidance and oversight mechanism for the achievement of gender equality, equity and women's empowerment in Belize (GEEWE). The NWC falls under the portfolio of the Ministry of Human Development and Social Transformation. Specifically, the National Women's Commission has the mandate to:

• Serve as a strategic advisory body to the minister with responsibility for women and gender issues and to advocate for the fulfillment of the standards, principles and goals embodied within the Convention (CEDAW), the National Gender Policy and other relevant policies.

• Serve as national advocate on issues related to the upgrading of the situation of women and girls and to advocate on matters regarding compliance with, or implementation of, the Convention, the National Gender Policy and other relevant policies as they relate to government ministries, institutions and entities, etc.;

• Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the provisions of the Convention and ensure national submission of the Belize progress report to the UN Committee every four years.

• Promote public awareness and encourage effective and efficient planning and coordination efforts among relevant stakeholders on matters relating to gender equality, equity and women's empowerment.

• Ensure that the appropriate implementation agencies undertake specific initiatives and tasks related to the implementation of the Convention, the National Gender Policy and other relevant policies.

• Recommend, through the minister, improvements in and development of national policies and legislation within the framework of the Convention, the National Gender Policy and other relevant policies.

The Commission was pleased to share information about who we are, what we do, and why equality remains essential and important in today’s society.

We are grateful to La Inmaculada R.C. School for the opportunity to educate and engage with children from a young age, reinforcing the importance of respect, love, and equality for everyone - both male and female.

On May 14th and 15th, the National Women’s Commission facilitated a Gender Awareness & Unconscious Bias Training Workshop for heads of management from the Development Finance Corporation across Belize in Belmopan.

The workshop created an engaging and reflective space for discussion on gender equality, equity, unconscious bias, inclusive leadership, and equitable workplace practices. These topics reinforced the importance of intentional decision-making in building stronger, more inclusive departments.

Participants provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, sharing that the training raised a deeper level of self-awareness and consciousness within themselves, expanding their knowledge on gender-related issues, and reinforced the important distinction between S*x and Gender.

The session encouraged participants to reflect on how unconscious bias can influence workplace interactions, leadership opportunities, and service delivery.

Through continued capacity building initiatives like these, The National Women’s Commission remains committed to fostering inclusive, equitable, and gender-responsive workplaces throughout Belize.

The Blue Teddy Bear is more than just a symbol; it represents comfort, safety, and the innocence every child deserves. By using something so familiar and gentle, the campaign creates a powerful contrast that draws attention to a serious issue: child abuse.

The teddy bear helps start conversations that are often difficult to have, making the topic more approachable for families, communities, and even children themselves. It serves as a reminder that every child deserves protection, love, and a safe space to grow. 💙🧸

Children are still being placed in harm’s way, even when abuse is known.

Imagine a child being forced to face the very person you fear, even after the truth has come to light.

This is NOT protection, rather this is FAILURE.

We CANNOT normalize a system that ignores fear, silence victims and put our children at risk.

Protect our children. Demand accountability.

Silence protects abusers, speaking up protects our children.

The time to act is now.

As Women’s Month comes to a close, we proudly highlight the work of the Corozal District Gender and Gender-Based Violence Committee (CDGGBVC).

Throughout the month, their commitment, advocacy, and community engagement have contributed meaningfully to advancing gender equality and addressing gender-based violence at the district level.

We invite you to view their video and join us in recognizing the impact of collaborative action. Only through continued partnership can we move closer to achieving balance and equity for all.
