What I Have To Say
A COUNTRY BETRAYED
As I bring this day to a close, I state clearly and without reservation, my unequivocal objection to the decision of the Board of Directors of Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) to proceed with the reported BZ$80 million acquisition of Speednet/SMART.
This decision has been taken despite sustained public concern and repeated calls for transparency, proper due diligence, and full disclosure of the financial, legal, regulatory, and governance implications of this transaction.
In proceeding regardless, the Board has disregarded legitimate concerns raised by the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB), the Parliamentary Opposition, and many Belizeans who continue to demand accountability and responsible stewardship of public resources.
The acquisition of a strategic national telecommunications asset using public funds must not proceed without full scrutiny. Belizeans are entitled to clear answers as to whether the transaction represents value for money; whether an independent valuation was conducted and validates the acquisition; whether all conflicts of interest have been properly disclosed and managed; and, whether the long-term interests of taxpayers, consumers, and Social Security contributors are being protected.
Public trust depends on transparency and accountability, not secrecy or disregard for legitimate public concern. This matter is not done, nor should it be. I call on all Belizeans who care about the future of our country and the future of their families to remain engaged. If ever there was a singular reason to send a clear message at the polls in the upcoming municipal elections: This Is It!
Transparency Matters.
Accountability Matters.
The National Interest Matters.
