Building Capacity. Strengthening Practice. Advancing Gender Integration.

Over 30 Social Workers and Supervisors from across the country participated in a four-day Gender and Social Work Practice Training that was hosted and facilitated by the Family Support and Gender Affairs Department (FSGAD), under the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs.

This training marked a first of its kind for the Department and represents a strategic investment in staff capacity, ensuring that gender is fully integrated, understood, and applied as a cross-cutting issue across all FSGAD programme areas.

From January 26–30, 2026, participants engaged in an intensive agenda that covered:

· Foundations of gender, power, inequality, and intersectionality

· Practical approaches to gender integration in intake, assessment, service planning, and implementation

· Strengthening ethical, reflective, and gender-responsive social work practice

· Holistic Gender-Based Violence (GBV) case management, including survivor-centred intake, crisis response, safety planning, and case planning

· Action planning to ensure gender integration is sustained at the individual, unit, and departmental levels

On the fifth day, with support from the Ministry’s Policy and Planning Unit, FSGAD staff convened their first general staff meeting for the new year. The session focused on refining the Department’s mission and vision and identifying priority actions to guide the work of the Department in the upcoming year.

Through interactive discussions, case studies, simulations, role plays, and action planning, staff were equipped with practical tools and competencies to improve service delivery, strengthen GBV response, and enhance outcomes for individuals, families, and communities.

This milestone initiative reflects FSGAD’s continued commitment to professional excellence, strategic planning, and gender-responsive social protection services nationwide.

To close off 16 Days Activism, Fsgad Dept hosted a Community Information Session at the Unity Presbyterian Primary School in Belize City along with Belize Police Department, Ministry of Health and Wellness, Belize Family Life Association, Community Rehabilitation Department, Department of Human Services, Belize Family Court and Protel.

Oh the same day, our team in Orange Walk hosted another information booth at Saint Michael R.C. School in San Felipe Village, providing information along side NDACC and the GBV committee.

Parents, teachers, students and community members visited the various booths getting valuable information useful for their families. Bringing the information and services to their community is a step in strengthening preventative efforts. We often fail to recognize that many are not able to make it to our office. As such, bringing it to them make a difference. Our Department is grateful to our Teams and our partners for accepting our invitation.

Our teams across the country have been busy reaching out through Pop Up Booths and Information Sessions. On Devember 5, our Gender Development Officer joined the Belize Bank Expo and engaged customers and the general public with the provision of information on services and available support for those facing GBV and families in crisis.

On December 8, our Belize City Team partnered with the Atlantic Bank on Freetown Road and interacted with customers visiting the Bank and those who passed by. Engaging the private sector expands our outreach and allows us to engage persons who.might not necessarily visit our offices. We thank both institutions for accepting our invitation to partner with us. Fsgad Dept stands ready to support any organization willing to be a part of the response.
