In the middle of everything that life throws at us each day, sometimes the most powerful change begins quietly with a single seed, a quiet vision, a hope that something meaningful would one day grow, not just for today, but as a legacy of care, healing, and intention.

At the Mental Health Unit Ministry of Health and Wellness, what started as an idea quickly grew as passionate hands and hearts came together, and slowly that vision began to take shape.

Now, the first signs are emerging. Life is taking root, and with it, a reminder that growth takes patience, effort, and people who believe enough to nurture it. Even in the busiest, hardest moments, we must still make room, to grow, to breathe, and to care.

The Mental Health Unit, Ministry of Health & Wellness continues to strengthen cross-sector partnerships, ensuring that mental health awareness, support, and care reach everyone in our communities.

In collaboration with the Belize Coast Guard, we engaged personnel in meaningful conversations on mental health and self-care recognizing that the demands of service require both physical and psychological resilience. From high-pressure operations to long hours and time away from family, our uniformed personnel face unique challenges.

Prioritizing mental well-being is essential for readiness, performance, and overall quality of life. We applaud the Belize Coast Guard for their openness, participation, and commitment to building a culture where well-being comes first.

In collaboration with UNICEF Belize, staff from Corozal Community Hospital/Corozal Polyclinic II and local clinics have completed training on perinatal mental health, learning how to recognize perinatal mental health conditions, apply the screening tool, identify referral pathways, and provide supportive care strategies for pregnant and postpartum women.

With this training, the Northern Health Region has completed its perinatal mental health training program, ensuring that the majority of staff across the region have received education and capacity-building in this critical area.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness continues to work to ensure having healthier moms, babies, and families across Belize.

The Mental Health Unit at the Ministry of Health and Wellness continues to champion self-care because those who care for others must also care for themselves!

The week ended on a high note as staff were encouraged to step away from their desks for a few minutes of movement, laughter, and brain-boosting fun. From light physical activity to engaging games that exercised the mind, it was a refreshing reminder that self-care doesn’t have to be complicated it can be simple, energizing, and joyful.

Self-care empowers teams to perform at their best with renewed energy and resilience.

When Headquarters is well, the entire health system is stronger.

When staff feel valued, services thrive.

At the Northern Regional Hospital, healthcare professionals strengthened their skills through a Perinatal Mental Health Training, conducted in collaboration with UNICEF Belize.

Pregnancy and the postpartum period bring significant physical and emotional changes. When healthcare providers are equipped to recognize early signs of anxiety, depression, and emotional distress, mothers receive timely support that can make a lasting difference for both parent and child.

This training reinforces compassionate, evidence-informed care ensuring that mental health is part of routine maternal care.

Supporting a mother’s well-being strengthens bonding, promotes healthy development, and builds resilient families.

The Mental Health Team gathered for its first bimonthly meeting of the year where a revision of the progress and milestones achieved in 2025 were done, and the groundwork was laid for a stronger, more compassionate mental health response in 2026.

Mental health care is a right, not a privilege. Free mental health services continue to be available at the mental health clinics across the country. Everyone deserves support, hope, and healing no matter where they live.

A special welcome to Glendy Chiquin, the newest member of our team! Glendy joins us as a Social Worker for Central Health Region and supporting the Northern Health Region. We’re excited to have her on board and look forward to the impact she’ll make in our communities.

The collective effort to strengthen accessible, compassionate mental health care across Belize continues.

The meeting emphasized the importance of perinatal mental health in safeguarding the wellbeing of mothers, infants, and families. Through open dialogue and collaboration, participants worked toward strengthening services, enhancing coordinated support, and closing existing gaps in care across the health system.

This collective effort reinforces Belize’s commitment to promoting maternal mental wellbeing and ensuring equitable, quality mental health services for all women during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

The Mental Health Unit of the Ministry of Health and Wellness hosted its annual workshop for persons with lived experience under the theme “Voices of Resilience: Lived Experience, Strengthened Futures.”

Our facilitators, Ms. Verlie Lamb and Ms. Juliet Simmons, delivered uplifting messages on nurturing resilience, embracing recovery, and the power of peer support in building healthier individuals and communities.

Participants engaged in a range of creative and expressive activities which included painting, soap making, singing, poetry, and even harmonica performances, each one beautifully led by individuals with lived experience, showcasing talent, courage, and personal growth.

This serves as a reminder that every story of survival is a source of strength, and when we create space for lived voices to lead, we empower healing, purpose, and hope for all.

The Mental Health Unit approaches the end of the year with a moment of reflection and renewal. Our end-of-year meeting allowed us to look back at the progress made, the challenges we overcame, and the countless lives touched through compassionate mental health care.

It was also a much-needed space to pause, exhale, and focus on the well-being of our valued staff who carry this work on their shoulders every day. Our mental health nurses, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and social worker stand at the front line listening, supporting, and guiding individuals through some of their most difficult moments. Their strength, empathy, and dedication make a difference in every corner of our country.

The mental health staff deserve every ounce of appreciation, care, and support. As we move into a new year, we honor their resilience and reaffirm our commitment to creating a supportive environment where they can continue to thrive and serve with heart.
