ReefKeeper Belize

ReefKeeper Belize Educating about Belize's marine environment and conservation through hands-on field trips and STEM. How does ReefKeeper give back to the Belizean community?

The Belize Barrier Reef is part of the second largest barrier reef in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and home to threatened and endangered creatures such as manatees, saltwater crocodiles, and goliath groupers. ReefKeeper educates Belizean students about the importance of the reef, mangroves, and seagrass to promote conservation and actions that directly help the marine environment. Reef

Keeper started in 2012 to fill a gap to provide much-needed ocean education to students in the Stann Creek District of Belize. From 2014, ReefKeeper has expanded to serve over 2,000 children in multiple districts in Belize, with the goal of providing ocean education countrywide. We provide free classroom lessons and field trips for Belizean schools, ideas and activities for conservation action, and an optional technology & engineering program that allows students to build a structure for a remotely operated underwater vehicle to study the marine environment. Most importantly, students get a 1-day trip to visit and study the reef, mangroves, seagrass, and islands firsthand when many Belizeans never get to visit these important marine environments. ReefKeeper:
• Donates free science lessons for students.
• Donates educational workbooks, USD $6/book value.
• Provides free teacher marine science training workshops.
• Mentors students.

The students from the Agriculture and Natural Resource Institute ANRI explored why mangroves matter at To***co Caye. Through hands-on learning, they discovered how mangroves protect coastlines from storms and erosion, support marine life like the Goliath grouper and rainbow parrotfish, and help combat climate change. Protecting mangroves means protecting Belize’s future. 🌊🌱
