Cahal Pech is a medium-sized Maya site located above the modern town of San Ignacio and is situated approximately 2km south of where the Mopan and Macal rivers meet to form the Belize River. The site core, which includes an acropolis, is located on a steep hill and covers approximate one hectare and is made up of seven plazas. In these plazas the visitor will encounter 34 structures including temp

les, administrative spaces, residential complexes, a sweathbath, and a ballcourt. The earliest known pottery in western Belize comes from Cahal Pech, dating to about 1200 BC. The site experienced continuous occupation until the Terminal Classic in the 9th/10th century AD. The name, Cahal Pech, is Yucatec Maya for ‘Place of the ticks’, which was coined in the 1950’s when the area around the site was used as cattle pasture.
