Changing Lives Through the Power of Mentorship. Small Act, BIG Impact.

For just a few hours a month a volunteer can guide a child to succeed. Big Brothers Big Sisters is different from other mentoring organizations in that we provide professional and experienced support to our volunteers and families. We have one commodity that is unique and quantifiable – a system with nearly 100 years of experience nationally in mentoring children. All else that we do and that we are has been easily copied and delivered by someone else but the name and brand and systems of mentoring are what makes a BBBS mentor program distinct and gives it unique value. We carefully screen our volunteers with nationally recognized and approved processes. We ensure our programs meet the needs of our children and youth. We support our children and youth and are careful to determine whether our programs meet their needs, and provide referrals to other social services when further or different needs are identified. We provide care and concern to our families and community backing them with action. All volunteers are carefully and thoroughly screened including a mandatory criminal record check, driver’s abstract, and detailed interviews. They participate in a 4 - 5 hour child safety training session. Matches are monitored on a strict schedule with monthly contact including personal meetings with all individuals involved in the first six months and quarterly contact thereafter. After matches mature, at minimum, there will be annual in person meetings with the parent, child and volunteer. Mentoring coordinators are always available between the scheduled contacts to answer any questions or address any concerns.

As Big Brothers Big Sisters month comes to a close, we’d like to share one last story that shows the positive impact that mentoring has on youth, as well as on our community.

Abigail and Nicole have been matched for 2.5 years, and their connection is easy to see.

Abigail gives their friendship a 10/10! She loves spending time with Nicole because she is fun and funny, they have lots in common, they match each other’s vibe, and Nicole always makes her feel happy. Abigail shares that Nicole is a trusted friend and a safe space—someone she knows she can always talk to.

Nicole says their time together feels effortless. They laugh a lot, share a similar sense of humor, can talk about anything and everything, and can simply hang out while always having fun. Whether they’re drawing each other (Abigail is a true artist, as seen in the photo!), watching Young Sheldon, or going for walks, they genuinely enjoy their time together.

Nicole wanted to build a meaningful connection and be a positive influence in someone’s life—and that’s exactly what has happened. Abigail’s mom says the match has exceeded her expectations, her daughter is now thriving! She is so grateful for the friendship and time they share together.

They have a friendship built on comfort, laughter, trust, and simply enjoying being together—that’s a match that just clicks!

Meet RG and Marcus! Despite only having been matched for 7 months, these 2 of exemplified what it means to be part of this program.

RG’s enthusiasm and openness to try new things, combined with Marcus’s love for the outdoors, initiation, and his ability to connect with RG has made this match stand out in their limited time together.

They have enjoyed long hikes, bike rides, sushi dinners, trying new recipes, and neighborhood walks.

RG's parent has commented that their laughter is contagious and heartwarming to hear, joking with each other as they try new things in the kitchen.

They have loved their time together and cannot wait to continue making more memories!

💙 Happy Big Brothers Big Sisters Day! 💙

Today, September 18, we’re celebrating the mentors, volunteers, families, supporters and community members who help make life bigger for young people across the Fraser Valley.
Mentorship doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sometimes, it’s as simple as showing up, listening, sharing a laugh, trying something new, or reminding a young person that someone believes in them.

Those little moments can create BIG impact. ✨
This Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, we’re celebrating the power of connection and the incredible difference a mentor can make in a young person’s life.

Help us Make Life Bigger. 💙

A Little Can Change Everything 💙
This match started just two months ago, and already, we have seen incredible progress.
A few months ago, we were contacted about a young boy who was struggling significantly.

He had experienced an incredible amount of loss and trauma throughout his life, including losing his father to a drug overdose and, more recently, his grandfather, his only consistent male role model to health issues. Shortly after moving here, he was physically assaulted by a group of students at school.

When I first met him, he was frightened and withdrawn. He refused to attend school, leave the house, or trust new people. During his intake, I sat on the floor of his bedroom while he cautiously answered my questions. When I asked if he wanted a Big Brother, he told me he wasn't sure.
Then he met his mentor.

His Big Brother is calm, kind, patient, and shares many of his interests. Over the past two months, small changes have started to become BIG milestones. He began leaving the house for longer periods, visiting the park and Castle Fun Park, attending a match event, and playing alongside other children.

Recently, his grandmother shared something that may sound small but was monumental for him: he started going into the backyard on his own and jumping on the trampoline.

Just six months ago, he wouldn't even walk to the front door.

This is the power of a Big Brother. Sometimes, progress isn’t a huge transformation. Sometimes, it looks like an hour outside the house, a trip to the park, or a child feeling safe enough to play again.
Small Act. Big impact. 💙

We are so proud of this Little and grateful for the mentor who continues to show up, build trust, and remind him that he is not alone.

💙 This September, let’s Make Life Bigger. 💙

September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, and we’re celebrating the incredible power of mentorship to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people.

Mentorship doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s simply showing up, listening, sharing a new experience, or reminding a young person that someone believes in them. These small moments can build confidence, open doors, and help young people see what’s possible.

✨ A conversation can become confidence.
✨ Showing up can build trust.
✨ Encouragement can inspire resilience.
✨ One caring relationship can change a life.

This September, we’re inviting our community to Make Life Bigger by getting involved. Whether you become a mentor, donate, volunteer, or help spread the word about the importance of youth mentorship, you can make a difference.

September 18 is Big Brothers Big Sisters Day!

Join us as we shine a spotlight on the incredible impact mentorship has in our communities.

💙 Together, we can make life bigger for young people across the Fraser Valley.
