This Week at the Abbotsford Chamber

➡️Next Gen (Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce) and CYPE partnered to host Summer Whites Night at Chapters Estate Winery. It was a great evening of networking, connection and bringing young professionals and entrepreneurs from across the Fraser Valley together.

➡️ In partnership with the Indigenous Working Group, we hosted Weaving Authenticity: Indigenous Businesses and Artisans, featuring artisans, storytelling and collaboration. Guests enjoyed a short film created by Nate Dickson of Woven Cedar Films, followed by a panel discussion with Nate, Kathy, Ray and Raphael. It was an impactful evening of acknowledging, learning, and celebrating through film, reflection, and community connection.

➡️ We hosted a roundtable discussion with MP Randy Hoback focused on trade and tariffs. The conversation provided an opportunity for local leader to share their experiences, ask questions and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Canadian businesses in today’s changing trade environment.

As B.C. works to strengthen domestic production capacity and build a more resilient economy, the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce welcomes the Province’s proposal to expand food-processing opportunities in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR).

These changes would help strengthen food security, support farmers, enhance supply chain resilience, and grow B.C.’s value-added agri-food sector. Together, these benefits can help attract investment, create local industrial jobs, and drive economic growth. The Abbotsford Chamber has long advocated for modernizing the ALR to promote food security and unlock the full potential of B.C.’s manufacturing and agri-food industries. “This is a major escalation in a trade dispute that is already taking a toll on Canadian businesses.” say Alex Mitchell, CEO of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.

In Abbotsford, this hits close to home. We are Canada’s agricultural capital, with a strong manufacturing sector and a growing aerospace and aviation cluster. Our businesses buy, sell and move goods across this border every day, and we continue to be the most exposed community in British Columbia to the impacts of these tariffs..

For a small business, a 50 per cent tariff isn’t something you simply absorb. It can mean losing a customer overnight, putting an investment on hold, or having to make very difficult decisions about jobs.

That’s why small and medium enterprises, like our members, need to be at the centre of Canada’s response, and diversification efforts. They drive our economy, employ our neighbours and anchor our communities, but they have the least room to absorb another major cost shock. Federal support must move quickly and actually reach the businesses taking the hit.

Canada also needs to play the long game and become more competitive. We need to tear down internal trade barriers, build the infrastructure that gets Canadian products to market, find new customers around the world and make it easier to invest and grow here at home.

There is no question that Canada must stand up for its economic interests. But the end goal has to be a stable and workable trading relationship with our largest customer.”

Right now, our focus at the Abbotsford Chamber is on the businesses behind these numbers, our valued members that deliver for the Canadian economy. We want to hear what this means for their orders, their costs and their employees, and we will make sure those realities are heard by government.”

As Canada-U.S. trade discussions collapsed over the weekend and new 50% U.S. tariffs on $28 billion worth of Canadian exports took effect Saturday, Global News spoke with Abbotsford Chamber CEO, Alex Mitchell, about what the escalating trade uncertainty means for local businesses in British Columbia.

Join the partners of the Indigenous Businesses Working Group at Semá First Nation Hall on Wednesday, August 26 for an evening of Indigenous storytelling, creativity, art and business.

The evening will feature a short video created by Nate Dickson of Woven Cedar Films. Nate is a member of Kwantlen First Nation, born and raised in Langley, B.C., where he continues to live and work. He founded Woven Cedar Films, a video production company that works with non-profits and First Nations organizations to capture and share their stories. Nate also travels across Canada filming events and short documentaries.

Following the screening, a moderated panel discussion with Nate Kathy, Ray and Rapheal will bring community members and guests together to explore the stories, perspectives and themes shared throughout the film, while creating space for meaningful conversation and continued collaboration.
