MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY
The Aklavik Indian Band is seeking compassionate, dependable, and community-minded individuals to join our team as Casual Shelter Relief Workers.
Casual Shelter Relief Workers provide support and assistance to individuals accessing shelter services. Relief workers help maintain a safe, respectful, and supportive environment while assisting clients with their immediate needs and supporting the daily operations of the shelter.
These positions are casual and on-call and may include day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for shelter clients.
• Assist clients with immediate needs and provide emotional support when appropriate.
• Monitor shelter activities and ensure shelter rules and procedures are followed.
• Respond appropriately to crises and emergency situations.
• Assist with intake and documentation procedures.
• Maintain accurate daily records, logs, and incident reports.
• Support clients with referrals to community resources and services.
• Assist with meal preparation and light housekeeping duties.
• Ensure cleanliness and organization of shelter facilities.
• Work collaboratively with shelter staff, community agencies, and service providers.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Successful applicants will demonstrate:
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals experiencing crisis or hardship.
• Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Respect for Indigenous cultures, traditions, and values.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good organizational and record-keeping skills.
• Reliability, flexibility, and dependability.
ASSETS
The following qualifications are considered assets:
• Experience working in shelters, social services, or community programs.
• First Aid and CPR Certification.
• Food Safe Certification.
• Crisis Intervention Training.
• Mental Health First Aid Training.
• Valid Driver's Licence.
• Knowledge of local programs and community resources.
REQUIREMENTS
• Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, overnight shifts, and holidays.
• Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check may be required.
• Must demonstrate professionalism and respect toward clients and coworkers.
• Commitment to creating a safe, culturally respectful, and trauma-informed environment.
