We've declared a provincewide State of Provincial Emergency as the new, fast-moving Bald Range wildfire forces thousands of people from their homes in the Summerland area.

At every step, we're focused on ensuring that emergency crews have the tools they need to protect people and communities.

The Alert Bay Volunteer Fire Department is and has always been an incredibly diverse organization and it’s time to explore how we can better represented as bi’bakwam.

A fantastic start is language. What are words that describe the fire service?
To date we have a word for Firefighter: k̓a̱lx̱'ida̱'enux̱w — good at putting out fire.

Some words may exist and some may have to be interpreted from English such as:
-Fire Truck
-Firehall
-hose line
-bunker gear/turnout gear
-fire hydrant
-SCBA (Air Pack)
-Fire Axe
-emergency lights and sirens
-etc ….
