Landing Trail Intermediate School Landing Trail Intermediate School is a Grade 4-6 dual track school (English program and French Immersion), located in Athabasca, Alberta.

Landing Trail Intermediate School is a grade 4-6 dual track school, English program and French Immersion. We are located in a unique area nestled beside the Muskeg Creek Trails well known for hiking, running, skiing, and nature exploration. Students make use of these trails every day. Landing Trail Intermediate School was originally called Athabasca Elementary School. The official opening ceremony of the school was held on March 18th, 1966. LTIS is an Apple School. This means that we encourage healthy choices through daily physical activity, a nutrition policy that applies to what food the school may serve, and mental health through citizenship. All students are encouraged to actively participate in the classroom lessons and in the many extra-curricular activities offered at LTIS. Each class participates in a citizenship project to assist the greater school community and to promote selflessness and community service. Some examples of these projects include: cleaning and organizing the PE equipment, looking after the paper/juice recycling and the 1K club. The overarching goal of the school is to create the optimum learning environment. For this to happen, the school environment needs to be safe, caring, welcoming and respectful. Our inclusive environment provides opportunities in which each student can grow academically, socially and emotionally. Our school priorities are:

1. Literacy

Literacy is embedded in all areas of learning and teachers embed literacy strategies in their lessons regardless of subject matter. Our Levelled Literacy and Precision Reading programs provide opportunities for students to increase their literacy skills. LTIS offers a morning reading program with the focus on reading accuracy and comprehension. We partner with community members to provide a volunteer remedial reading program

2. Mindfulness

Mindfulness and self-regulation are important skills for students to learn so that they can better manage their emotions throughout the day. This leads to enhanced learning opportunities as students reflect on their actions and how their actions affect others. Classroom teachers are the primary leaders of mindfulness. We also partner with outside agencies, clubs and groups to support students in the areas of socialization, self-esteem, and resiliency.

Over the next few weeks, schools will be sharing the results of the recent Alberta Education Grade 1 to 5 Literacy and Numeracy Screeners. These provincial assessments help teachers identify foundational skills to ensure every student has the right level of classroom support.

You will receive a paper copy of your child's screener results. The results will clearly point out areas in reading or mathematics where your child is doing well, as well as any areas where they require additional support. If the results show that your child would benefit from additional support, the package will also detail the specific type of intervention (small group instruction or one-to-one instruction) they will receive at school to bridge those gaps.

Please look out for these results based on your child's grade level:

Grades 1-3: Results will be sent home for your review by October 30th, 2026.
Grades 4 and 5: Results will be sent home by November 6th, 2026.

If you have any questions once you receive the paper results, please feel free to reach out to your child's classroom teacher. To help keep families informed about their child’s academic progress, schools will be sending home paper copies of Interim Reports throughout the school year. The first interim report will be sent home by the end of October.

Interim reports provide a summary of your child’s academic progress to date, based on completed summative assessments (assignments, tests and other work used to evaluate student learning). These reports are also a useful reference when meeting with teachers during Parent-Teacher Conferences.

You can also monitor your child’s academic progress through PowerSchool Parent Portal, our online student information system. Parent Portal provides up-to-date information on your child’s marks and attendance, as well as access to school events and news.

We strongly encourage all families to set up a PowerSchool Parent Portal account if they have not already done so. If you need assistance creating or accessing your account, please contact the school.

If you have any questions about your child’s interim report or academic progress, please contact your child’s teacher.
