♻️ Changes to Recycling in Athabasca

Athabasca's residential recycling program is changing on October 1, 2026.

The program will now be operated through Circular Materials, and residents will be able to recycle a wider range of materials.

Your regular recycling collection day is NOT changing.

🛍️ You Will Need to Provide Your Own Recycling Bags

Under the new program, recycling bins will not be used.

Residents will need to provide their own clear or blue see-through recycling bags. Black or opaque bags cannot be used.

Recyclables should be placed loose inside the bag, rather than being put into smaller bags first.

♻️ More Materials Can Be Recycled

The new program accepts additional materials, including:

• Glass containers
• Foam packaging
• Plastic bags and film
• Stand-up pouches and snack wrappers
• Empty aerosol containers
• Laminated paper and plastic packaging
• And more

Please make sure containers are empty, clean and dry, and flatten cardboard before placing it out for collection.

Items such as batteries, hazardous materials, garbage and organics do not belong in your curbside recycling.

For the complete list of accepted materials and recycling instructions, please review the 2026/2027 Athabasca Recycling Guide.

As of October 1, 2026, your community’s recycling program will be managed by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system in Alberta.
