Happy Convocation season TBT!

Today’s feature is an aerial view of Athabasca University, taken between 1995 and 2000, with the old red and white Convocation tent set up on campus. The tent was used for Convocations from 1995 until 2009 when the Athabasca Regional Multiplex was built across the street from the university and convocation ceremonies were moved there.

Now what could these three have in common, TBT?

This photo from 1984 depicts Athabasca University’s first three presidents at the 7th Convocation ceremony, held at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton! From left to right are Dr. Stephen Griew, Dr. WAS Smith, and Dr. TC Byrne.

Dr. Byrne was the first president of the University serving from 1971 until 1976. Dr. Smith followed, serving from 1976 until 1980. Dr. Griew served as the third president from 1981 to 1985 and oversaw the University through its transition from Edmonton to Athabasca.
