📢 Upcoming Homelessness Count in Atikokan

On November 20, 2024, the District of Rainy River Services Board (DRRSB) will be teaming up with local agencies in Atikokan to learn more about homelessness in the area. This count will help us understand who needs support, so we can plan better services for individuals and families in the future.

🛏️ What’s involved? We’ll be asking people where they stayed on the night of November 20. If someone stayed in temporary or unstable housing, they’ll complete a survey to share their experience.

This effort will help us create a real-time list of people needing support and make sure resources go where they’re needed most.

October 10 is World Homeless Day – a chance to raise awareness about the needs of people experiencing homelessness.

It started on October 10, 2010, when aid workers from around the world came together to create a day for highlighting this important issue, pushing for more resources, and encouraging everyone to get involved.

But the work doesn’t stop with just one day. Ending homelessness takes ongoing effort from both organizations and individuals like you. By speaking up, learning more, and lending a hand, we can all help make a real difference in the lives of those who don’t have a home or are at risk of losing theirs.

Sam Tsemberis, founder of Pathways to Housing and creator of the Housing First model, has been recognized as one of TIME’s 100 most influential people of 2024!

Sam revolutionized housing by listening to the needs of people experiencing homelessness, first pioneering Housing First in Canada.

He found that safe and affordable housing was what they wanted first. Instead of having to prove that they were worthy of a roof over their heads, Sam argued that housing would provide the foundation, figuratively and literally, on which people could build the rest of their lives.

Thousands of lives have been changed all over the world because of Sam’s Housing First model.
