Today, and through September, which is National Recovery Awareness Month, we're raising awareness about drug overdoses and will be highlighting harm reduction and recovery resources right here in York Region.

📣 Newmarket business owners, we have an update! 📣

Our detectives followed the evidence, identified a suspect, and arrested and charged a man in connection with at least 14 commercial break and enters which occurred in the early morning hours over the last several weeks.

A search warrant executed at a Newmarket residence also resulted in the seizure of cash trays and break and enter tools.

But we're not done. Investigators believe there may be additional victims.

York Regional Police Constable Douglas Tribbling was nearing retirement when he was shot while investigating a break and enter investigation at a business in Markham on August 19, 1984.

Tragically, he died in hospital days later on August 21, 1984.

Today and every day, we remember Constable Tribbling's courage and dedicated service to our community.

He was a hero in life, not death.

If you think you're seeing an increase in people unsafely riding e-scooters, Southlake Health can confirm your suspicion.
If you ride an e-scooter, you can best avoid a trip to the hospital by following the rules below.

Riders must:
✔️ Be at least 16 or older to operate
✔️ Remain standing while riding
✔️ Wear a bicycle helmet if you are under 18

Do not:
❌ Carry passengers or cargo
❌ Ride an e-scooter on controlled access highways (i.e. 400-series highways, QEW)
❌ Exceed a speed of 24 km/h on a level surface

*Additional restrictions are subject to municipal bylaws.

📣New scam alert!📣

Have you heard of the new cellphone upgrade scam?

Here’s how it works:

📞Someone calls you pretending to be your phone provider, offering you a free upgrade for a phone or tablet, at a discount that seems too good to be true.
📞The fraudster will contact you again, say there was a mistake and that the discount wasn’t applied.
📞They will ask you to return the device using a pre-paid shipping label or a QR code that they provide you.
📞That shipping label redirects the device to the suspect, not your provider and you’ll be left making payments for a device you don’t have.

How to protect yourself:
✅Don’t make changes to your account because of an unexpected phone call.
✅Always confirm discounts, orders and returns with your provider directly through a confirmed phone number, or at a store.
✅Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it likely is.

This was just part of the team that helped keep more than 100,000 visitors safe during Indy weekend. Congrats City of Markham + Ontario Indy on an amazing event.

There’s no substitute for getting out into the community and meeting people face to face.

Chief Paulo Da Silva spent time at the Newmarket Main St. Farmers' Market connecting with residents, hearing what they have to say, and learning about what really matters to them.

York Regional Police officers have been spending more time outside their cruisers this summer to make real connections with locals. You may have more in common with the people behind the badge than you realize.
