You may have seen our previous reel about a fatal hit-and-run in the City of Vaughan.

Thanks to your assistance and the work of investigators, a 41-year-old Vaughan man has now been charged.

However, the suspect vehicle remains outstanding.

We are reminding the public that anyone who assists with concealing, repairing or altering the vehicle in an effort to avoid detection may be committing a criminal offence and could face charges.

This includes anyone who performs or arranges body work, paint work or mechanical repairs intended to conceal damage caused in this collision.

Investigators are urging anyone with information or who has worked on the suspect vehicle, or is in the process of carrying out a repair, to stop immediately and contact the YRP Major Collision Investigation Unit or Crime Stoppers.

Would you speed past a school bus if the Chief of Police was watching?

What about if your kids were on the bus?

It's National School Bus Safety Week and we're reminding drivers to slow down and be alert.

Give school buses plenty of room, and watch for students crossing the road or getting on or off the bus.

If you fail to stop for a school bus, not only are you putting everyone at risk, but you could face a $400 fine.

Public safety is a shared responsibility, so please, do your part to help keep our kids safe.

On Persons Day, which commemorates women being included in the legal definition of “persons”, we are reflecting on our commitment to the pledge, to recruit, retain and advance the next generation of female policing leaders.

“This isn’t about lowering standards. It’s about raising opportunities,” Deputy Chief Cecile Hammond said last fall when she signed the pledge on behalf of York Regional Police.

Constable Mandy Bambrough meets a lot of young women looking to get into policing at York Regional Police Recruiting events.

Then she meets them again when they're in uniform, working their dream jobs. Many tell her that she was their inspiration.

She was the first woman to earn a spot in the Canine Unit.

When Constable Bambrough joined Canine in March 2014, it didn’t feel like a big deal to her, but 12 years later, having been with the unit ever since, the weight of her historic accomplishment has set in.

Unfortunately for our Canine Unit, Police Service Dogs don't always consider "can my handler get through here?"

Nevertheless, Constable Blythen and PSD Oggy 🐕‍🦺 persevered through the bush, mud and whatever else came their way to make the arrest.

We are still seeing too many people riding e-scooters in municipalities where they are illegal.

It's much easier to check the rules before you buy than to battle the store about their return policy or pay a fine for riding illegally.

The first offence might be a warning, but offenders could face charges. And parents, you could too, if you let your child ride illegally. 🚫🛴

The extended darkness at this time of year isn't just depressing, it's dangerous.

Sunsets, sunrises and darkness in general, add another layer of difficulty to visibility during your morning and evening commutes.

Make sure you take extra precautions when you approach an intersection, not just for other drivers, but for all road users.

And don't be afraid to clean the inside of your windshield too.

Let's all get home safe.

Patience, empathy, open communication.

On World Mental Health Day, we are highlighting our Mental Health Support Team, duos of police officers and Your Support Services Network crisis workers who respond to individuals experiencing mental health crises.

The Mental Health Support Team’s response strategy combines the public safety training of a police officer with the mental health expertise of a crisis worker to de-escalate situations where someone might be a danger to others or themselves.

This team then works with community partners to ensure those in crisis get the help they need.

Both through our own initiatives and our work with partners, York Regional Police is committed to the well-being of our community.

17 members are moving into leadership positions for the first time as sergeants and detectives, earning their new badges at a ceremony at our headquarters today.

They have lived our shared values of professionalism, compassion, fairness, courage and respect, and are now ready to set that example for others, leading, mentoring and keeping our community safe.

We wish them each good luck in their new roles.
