Canada is heading into a high-stakes review of CUSMA with the United States, and Washington is already signalling that relief from tariffs and other trade pressure may come with conditions attached.

That’s what makes this moment feel bigger than one dispute over steel, autos, or softwood.

Canada still sends an enormous share of its exports south, with 75.9% of total exports going to the U.S. in 2024, so every shake-up in Washington lands here with real force.

Ottawa already has trade deals in force covering dozens of countries, including Europe through CETA and Pacific partners through CPTPP, which means diversification is less a slogan than a path Canada has been building for years.

The deeper lesson is about leverage.

When one customer dominates your business, every “conversation” starts sounding a lot like a demand.

Canada will always trade heavily with the U.S. because geography is geography, though moments like this are a sharp reminder that resilience comes from having more doors open when one gets slammed.

Churchill keeps showing up lately as one of those old northern ideas that suddenly feels very current again.

The new Canada Manitoba agreement is meant to speed major projects like Port of Churchill Plus, which Ottawa says could modernize the port with rail upgrades, a stronger trade corridor, and other northern infrastructure.

That builds on Manitoba’s earlier $51 million commitment for Hudson Bay rail improvements and a new critical minerals storage facility tied to the port.

What makes Churchill interesting is that it is not just a local project.

It is really about whether Canada can build more reach through its own North instead of always sending everything through the same southern arteries.

For years, Churchill sounded like a dream people brought up whenever they wanted to talk big about Arctic potential.

Now it is starting to sound like an actual plan.

Time 100 is out 👀 — and only one Canadian made the list 🇨🇦

That honour goes to Prime Minister Mark Carney, who’s being called the “George Clooney of finance” by Time Magazine.

From leading a major political comeback to taking a strong global stance, Carney’s rise has been hard to ignore — and yes, even his eyebrows are making headlines 😂

Meanwhile, the real George Clooney is trending for his own political comments… ironic, right?

Only one Canadian on the list — but definitely a headline-maker.

The best days in Parliament are when we can see it through the eyes of young people.

Thank you to the teachers of Nepean’s Chapman Mills Public School for bringing your Grade 5 students to West Block last week. It was so much fun to show them around and take a few very thoughtful questions.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled a new Canada-U.S. advisory council ahead of a summer review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.

The cross-party body includes former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole, ex-cabinet minister Lisa Raitt and former Quebec premier Jean Charest, alongside business leaders from key industries.

The committee will be chaired by Dominic LeBlanc and is intended to provide advice on Canada-U.S. economic relations.

Carney said the group would bring “the broadest perspectives” to help strengthen economic ties with the United States, as tensions persist over tariffs and trade.

The move comes as Washington signals it may not resolve all trade issues with Canada before the July deadline to renegotiate the agreement.
