Malahide Township is a prosperous community of more than 8,800 residents located within Elgin County. Our rich history is preserved throughout our township within all of our communities. Take a journey through Malahide and take a step back in time as you may see our local Amish community on a h

orse and buggy along the country road side. Visit one of the many quaint restaurants within the community that will surely be satisfying. Next take a stop at one the roadside markets for fresh Malahide produce. Drive past the former R.C.A.F training base, now the home of the Ontario Police College which also has an extremely popular migratory bird viewing area managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources. Stop in for a day of fun and programs at one of our new community facilities, Malahide Community Place located in Springfield and South Dorchester Community Hall in Lyons, or rent one of the facilities for a family event, seminar, banquet and more! Enjoy a local winery, art gallery, or shop for an afternoon of delight. End your day spent in Malahide along the shores of Lake Erie in Port Bruce relaxing on the beach or try your luck at fishing off the pier. While enjoying the warm summer breeze and the sun setting over blue waters dine at one of many restaurants located along the beach. From picturesque horizons on the waterfront of Port Bruceโ€™s beach to the colourful fields of rolling farmland, Malahide offers a bountiful array of scenery and activity, creating memories that last a lifetime.

As warmer temperatures arrive and summer approaches, remember these important water safety tips. ๐ŸŒŠ

Rip currents are powerful channels of water that flow away from shore and can quickly carry swimmers into deeper water. In the Great Lakes, rip currents move quickly at the surface of the water and are strong enough to overpower even experienced swimmers.

One of the most important things to remember is that rip currents do ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ pull people underwater. They pull people away from shore.

If you find yourself caught in a rip current, first try to stay calm and focus on your breathing. Then remember to:

๐Ÿ”„ ๐—™๐—Ÿ๐—œ๐—ฃ onto your back
๐ŸŒŠ ๐—™๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—”๐—ง to conserve your energy
โžก๏ธ ๐—™๐—ข๐—Ÿ๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—ช the flow of the water and do not fight the current

As the current weakens in deeper water, breaking waves become less intense. When you feel an opportunity to move between waves, take it and swim back toward shore. When the lake pulls you, wait until it stops, do not fight it, and float.

Signs of a rip current can include:
โ€ข A disorganized interruption in the typical rhythm of breaking waves
โ€ข Waves breaking on shallow sandbars, but not in deeper channels or troughs
โ€ข Cusps along the shoreline: โ€œWhere there is a dip, there is a rip.โ€
โ€ข Strong currents forming near piers, break walls, jetties, or other shoreline structures
โ€ข Narrow paths of water moving away from shore through the surf zone

This week is National Public Works Week. This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œRooted in Service, Powered by Community,โ€ highlights the essential role Public Works professionals play in keeping our communities safe, connected, and thriving.

From maintaining roads, sidewalks, bridges, water and wastewater systems, parks, beaches, and public spaces, to responding after hours and supporting daily operations, Public Works staff are hard at work year-round keeping our communities running.

This week is an opportunity to recognize their important contributions, often behind the scenes and in all weather conditions, that help strengthen and support our community.

A big thank you to our Public Works crew for your hard work and dedication keeping our community running every day!
