🚒 Training Recap Tuesday

This weeks training focused on aspects of water rescue operations, giving our members the opportunity to practice essential skills and stay familiar with the equipment used during a water rescue response.

Our members worked through the process of getting into their water rescue gear and preparing the rescue boat, followed by hands on practice with throw ropes and haul systems.

Water rescue operations require strong communication, teamwork, and confidence in both our equipment and our skills. Regular hands on training allows our firefighters to build that confidence and be ready to help someone in or around the water.

🎒 Thursday Safety Tip: Back to School Safety

With the school year just around the corner, it’s a great time for a reminder that getting to and from school safely takes a little extra attention from everyone.

🚗 Slow down in school zones and watch for increased pedestrian traffic.
🚍 Stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing and watch carefully for children crossing.
🚸 Be patient during drop-off and pick-up and avoid blocking crosswalks or driveways.
🚲 Keep young cyclists and pedestrians visible and remind them to use designated crossings, wear helmets, and stay alert.

As the school year begins, let’s all do our part to keep our kids, families, and community safe.

🚨Slow down. Stay alert. Keep our kids safe.

From all of us at NDFD, have a safe and happy rest of your summer and start to your school year!

🚒 Truck Tuesday: Meet Tank 72

This week we are highlighting Tank 72, our tanker fire truck and an important part of our water supply operations here in North Dumfries.

In rural areas where municipal hydrants may not be readily available, having access to a reliable water supply is critical. Tank 72 is designed to transport water to the scene and support firefighting operations, helping our crews establish and maintain the water supply needed to fight fires effectively.

Tank 72 can work alongside our pumpers and other apparatus to support shuttle and water supply operations, moving water between a reliable water source and the fire scene. These operations require coordination, communication, and plenty of practice to make sure water keeps flowing when it’s needed most.

Like all of our apparatus, Tank 72 is only as effective as the firefighters operating it. Our firefighters regularly train in water supply and drafting operations so they’re prepared to put this equipment to work when our community needs us.

🚨 When there isn’t a hydrant nearby, Tank 72 helps bring the water to us.

🚒 This Thursday, we’re switching things up.

Instead of our usual safety tip, we are taking the opportunity to recognize and celebrate one of our own.

After more than 40 years of dedicated service to the North Dumfries Fire Department, Captain Steve Brunton has officially retired.

This past weekend, our department got to celebrate Captain Brunton and congratulate him on his years of service.

For over four decades, Steve has answered the call, supported his fellow firefighters, shared his knowledge and experience, and dedicated countless hours to serving our community. His commitment to the department and the people of North Dumfries has left a lasting impact that will be felt for years to come.

Steve, congratulations on an incredible career and well deserved retirement. Thank you for your years of service, leadership, friendship, and everything you’ve given to this department.

From all of us at NDFD - thank you Captain Brunton.

Four decades of service. A lifetime of memories. A legacy that will last.

🔥 Thursday Safety Tip

Nothing beats a summer evening around the campfire, but a little preparation goes a long way in preventing unwanted fires.

Before lighting your next campfire, remember to:
🔥 Check for local fire bans or burn restrictions.
🪵 Build your fire in a safe, designated fire pit away from trees, tents, and anything that can burn.
💧 Keep a bucket of water, hose, or fire extinguisher nearby.
👀 Never leave a campfire unattended.
🪣 When you’re finished, completely extinguish the fire by drowning it with water, stirring the ashes, and repeating until everything is cool to the touch.

A campfire should never be left smouldering - if it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.

From all of us at the NDFD, we hope you enjoy the outdoors safely this summer. Stay safe, protect our community, and help prevent fires.

We’re incredibly proud of our members for representing NDFD with dedication, professionalism and teamwork. Congratulations on your hard work and commitment, both on and off the course.

👏🏻Great job to everyone who competed and thank you to the organizers, volunteers and supporters, who made the event a success.

💧Thursday Safety Tip: Water Safety

Whether you’re spending the day at the beach, the lake, the pool, or out on the boat, taking a few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe around the water.

Remember to:
🦺 Wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating, paddling, or participating in water activities.
👀 Keep children within arm’s reach and provide constant supervision around the water.
🏊‍♂️ Swim with a buddy and know your limits.
🌩️ Check the weather and water conditions before heading out.
💧 Stay hydrated and take breaks, especially on hot summer days.

Water emergencies can happen quickly, but many are preventable with a little planning and awareness.

From all of us at the North Dumfries Fire Department, we hope you have a fun, safe, and enjoyable summer on the water.
