Detweiler Meetinghouse

Detweiler Meetinghouse The 1855 Detweiler Meetinghouse is the only surviving stone Mennonite meetinghouse in Ontario. Jacob F. Jacob H. Copies are available for sale.

It and the adjoining Roseville Mennonite Cemetery in a quiet rural setting is administered by Detweiler Meetinghouse Inc. The historic Detweiler Meetinghouse created in 1855, located one kilometer west of Roseville is the only surviving stone meetinghouse built by Mennonite settlers in Ontario. Detweiler was already ordained as a minister when he came to the Roseville area in 1822. Detweiler, pos

sibly a third cousin of Jacob F., who was an ordained deacon in Pennsylvania, also came to the Roseville area at that time. In 1992 a board was put in place to restore and preserve the meetinghouse as it appeared in the second half of the 19th century. The Roseville Mennonite Cemetery, adjacent to the Detweiler Meetinghouse, is operated by Detweiler Meetinghouse Inc. An illustrated history was written by Reg Good and published in 1999: "Detweiler's Meetinghouse: A History of Mennonites near Roseville, Ontario." It includes details about and photos of the building restoration.

Ivan Emke welcomes you to our programs with exuberance, humour and history! The video is a sample of what the audience -- and musicians -- enjoy pre program. Turn up the volume for a short clip at the 36 second mark.

Next week, May 28, at 7 pm, No Discernible Key will fill the meetinghouse with their farmer ballads, folksy country wisdom and ... more!

It was cool in the stone meetinghouse for Thursday's Hymn Sing led by Mark Diller Harder. Singing with "Voices Together" kept us warm!

See you next on May 28 when No Discernible Key entertains.
