When we bought our home nine years ago, we set out with a goal of creating an edible landscape that we could munch on from May until November. There were a couple of pear trees and a small vegetable plot on the property, but otherwise we were essentially starting from scratch.

This summer feels like we've finally achieved that goal! This is what a five minute meander through my backyard yielded today; red raspberries, black raspberries, sweet cherries, strawberries and jostaberries (not pictured, the goumi berries already in my belly). A perfect mid-morning snack. πŸ˜‹

The kids are especially loving it this year too (some more than others, ha). A favourite game at the moment is sending them out to find 5 different edible things to eat. It's fun seeing what they're most excited about.

We always try to keep a few strawberry plants in the cold frame to get that first taste of summer just a bit early. πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“

As I meander through the backyard gardens, I'm realizing that some of these photos have become a yearly tradition for me. If I scroll through my camera roll from past years , there's always a golden hour, service berry blossom shot. And it never gets old. This is definitely a serotonin booster for me. ❀️❀️❀️

Oh hi! It's me again. ☺️

Consistent social media posting and me have never really gotten along. I get too caught up in the logistics, planning, account reach, insights, long winded explanations (oops πŸ€ͺ), and I freeze before I even open the app. While I struggle to find beauty in this sometimes, I don't struggle to find beauty in my backyard!

So for the next few weeks I plan to step back from my overthinking tendency and just post things that are beautiful and bring me joy. Hopefully it brings you a bit of joy too.

Starting with these gorgeous, dewy Lady's Mantle 😍😍😍. More backyard beauty will sometimes also be found in stories.

It's not too late!!! πŸ…πŸ…πŸ…

If you haven't started your tomatoes yet, don't worry it's not too late!! We're about 6 weeks out from our last frost date, which makes it the perfect time to get those tomato seeds in some soil!

If you'll be supporting your local growers this year instead, sit back and enjoy this summer like weather before the busy gardening season actually begins. 🌱🌞😍

Cool season gardening is just around the corner!! πŸ’šπŸŒ±πŸ’š

Our cool growing season is almost here and there's a host of seeds we can start planting in the ground including peas, radishes, spinach, salad mixes, dill, beets, carrots, kale... All of these plants are resistant to frosty temps and some even grow better when the temperatures are cooler vs. the hot temps of summer.

Note that cooler growing temperatures also means that things will grow more slowly so be sure to add a few more days to the seed packages' estimated growing time.

The garlic is saying it's time for spring!!! πŸ§„β˜€οΈπŸ’š

We've officially made it to the first day of spring! We're still about 9 weeks out from planting those warm season veggies but if you're itching to get your hands in the dirt and want to try starting some seeds this year, now would be a great time to start some pepper plants. 🌢️🌢️🌢️

Otherwise, just enjoy these first day of spring vibes. 😎

If you're thinking about starting some of your own seedlings this year, now is a great time to start gathering your supplies!

We're about 12 weeks out from planting warm season crops outdoors!! (And only 6 - 8 weeks away from planting cool season crops outside too!!)

A good quality potting soil, a few planting pots or recycled containers (or maybe make your own papers pots!) and some seeds are all you need to get started.

I'm hoping to start some pepper plants in the next couple weeks. We'll also be starting some lettuce greens soon to put in the cold frame once out winter temperatures mellow a bit more.

If you're starting some of your own seedlings this year, what are you hoping to grow?

Still no hard frost in the garden!! So I'll just continue to enjoy these lovelies. πŸŒΌπŸ’β€οΈ
