There's only one more week until the opening of "Odysseys and Migration" on Saturday June 20, a travelling exhibition produced by the Chinese Canadian Museum that is being hosted in the Grand Room of Barkerville's Welcome Centre.

Spanning the 18th century to the present day, Odysseys and Migration traces the global journeys of Chinese migrants, from Hong Kong to Vancouver and across the wider diaspora, and exploring the experiences that have shaped Chinese Canadian identities over time. Through artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays, the exhibition examines themes of movement, belonging, resilience, and cultural connection. These narratives reflect both individual journeys and collective histories, highlighting the enduring strength and contributions of Chinese Canadian communities.

It was someone’s birthday today: the one and only William 'Billy' Barker!

The details of Billy Barker's early life are vague and unclear with some sources saying he was born in 1819 or 1820 while some sources suggest he was baptized June 7, 1817. He initially worked as a waterman on the canals between March and King's Lynn, England but immigrated to the United States to join thousands of other miners trying to find their fortune in the California Gold Rush. The lure of gold brought him further north to British Columbia in 1858 for the Fraser River Gold Rush where he worked at a claim at Canada Bar outside of Lillooet with several other Englishmen.
News of more and more lucrative prospects began pouring in from further north in British Columbia out of the Cariboo country and Billy Barker ended up on Williams Creek in his search for gold. On August 17, 1862, Barker and his partners uncovered rich deposits of gold 52 feet beneath the surface of the ground and so the story of Barkerville began with this discovery of gold in Williams Creek!

Billy Barker would continue his search for gold for the remainder of his life until he passed away on July 11, 1894 at an Old Men's Home in Victoria from cancer of the jaw.
