Next year's fuel bill is decided while the kiln is cold. Most outages are planned around what has worn out. The best ones are also planned around how the kiln should run once it's back online.
Two points from TAPPI's kraft recovery training are worth remembering. In a lime kiln, the chains can account for up to two thirds of the heat transfer surface. And chain systems are often overlooked during shutdowns.
Chain lost to wear is surface that no longer pulls heat from the gas. It tends to show up in exit gas temperature and fuel use until the next outage.
So what's worth checking while you have access?
Chain length and wear. Econoliner condition. High temperature castings. Where dust and buildup are starting.
If cement kiln outage planning is under way at your plant, or your mill is scoping its next lime kiln shutdown, settle the scope now. Custom chain and castings take time to produce.
JAMMBCO helps plant teams define the scope, supply the components and support the work on site.
