Finally, a day I could get into one of the bee yards. Looking good with some pollen coming in and the bees are using both the top and bottom entrances which is an indication that they’re strong.
Still too much snow to fire up the fence in case bears wintered nearby. I’ll give it a few more days

Have we come a long way? The basics remain the same. We just don’t use what were called "skeps" (filled with stationary comb) to house bees.
A gentleman called Mr Langstroth found that 3/8 of an inch was the magic number when coming up with his hive design that had movable frames.
Any space more than that, the bees filled with burr comb. Less than that, they filled with propolis - a sticky sap-like substance that hardens into a resin. The bees use it almost like a varnish to coat and sterilize the inside of the colony. If something large like a mouse intruded in the colony and was killed, it would be too heavy to remove. It would then be embalmed with a propolis coating preventing contamination of the sterile environment.
The Langstroth hive made life much easier and less painful 😂 on the beekeeper and less intrusive for the bees on the movable frames …
