Port de Grave Fishermen's Museum

Port de Grave Fishermen's Museum Our mission is to preserve the heritage of our peninsula and tell the story of its people's history.

The Port de Grave Fishermen's Museum is a sprawling, three-building museum complex nestled in the cliffs of Hibb's Hole, Port de Grave, Newfoundland & Labrador. In 1966 artist George Noseworthy and his wife, Margaret, visited Newfoundland for a vacation from the Bronx, New York and, upon falling in love with the scenery and people, decided to settle permanently in the fishing community of Hibb’s H

ole (now Hibb’s Cove) on the edge of the Port de Grave Peninsula. The Fishermen's Museum originally began in 1969 when Noseworthy started a small collection of artifacts from the area and needed a place to store them. With the help of a group of residents who saw the need to preserve and promote the local fishing heritage that was so rapidly changing, the whole community came together to build what is now the museum's main building. A few years after the museum's founding, it acquired and restored the nearby Porter House. An adjacent one-room schoolhouse, leased from the Anglican church that George Noseworthy had for some time used as an art school for local children, including Newfoundland artist Gary Kennedy, has also been restored. Though George Noseworthy passed away suddenly on September 14th, 1985, at the age of 56, we continue the work he began at the museum by offering tours of the collection he brought together and the museum he built to educate anyone willing to learn of our history.

“The island of Newfoundland, being well out into the Atlantic Ocean, is equal to placing an object on a mirror under a lamp. The surface of the sea acts as the mirror which causes an underlight or backlight. An incident of blue from sea and sky is quite prominent on most objects in this environment. Add to this, wind, energy and tidal energy and the result is an effect on all objects which makes the island and environment quite unique.”
- George Noseworthy, 1978

☕🌊 What a morning at the 5th Annual Mug Up in the Cove!

This year’s Mug Up looked a little different as the weather moved us off the slipway and inside the historic Hibbs Hole Schoolhouse, but it certainly didn’t keep anyone away!

In fact, this was our most attended Mug Up yet, with seven dozen muffins enjoyed throughout the morning! It was wonderful to see the Schoolhouse filled with friends, neighbours and visitors sharing coffee, conversation and plenty of laughs.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and for the generous donations made in support of the Fishermen’s Museum. Your continued support helps us preserve and share the history and heritage of our community.

We were also pleased to welcome Pam Parsons, MHA, Harbour Grace - Port De Grave, who presented the Port de Grave Fishermen's Museum with a Newfoundland and Labrador provincial flag. Thank you, Pam, for joining us and for the special presentation.

A sincere thank you to our event sponsors, Littlejohn's Plumbing, Heating, & Electrical and Fishing Vessel Conception Run, for helping make the 5th Annual Mug Up in the Cove possible.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who came through the doors. It was a great morning of connection, conversation and community, exactly what Mug Up in the Cove is all about.

See you next year! ☕⚓

🌊☕ WE’LL SEE YOU IN THE COVE!

We’ve been keeping a close eye on the forecast, and we’re going with the Cove!

There may be a shower or two around, but we’re hoping Mother Nature cooperates and lets us enjoy a Mug Up where it belongs, overlooking beautiful Hibbs Cove.

We’ll continue to keep an eye on conditions, and our indoor rain plan is ready if Mother Nature has other ideas.

So grab a sweater or light jacket and come enjoy a Saturday morning of coffee, tea, fresh muffins and good company by the water.

See you Saturday morning from 8:00–11:00 AM! ☕🧁
