The Town of Bay Roberts proudly unveiled the Ward Gosse Memorial Storyboard on Saturday, August 1, at the Bay Roberts Community Gardens, celebrating the remarkable athletic achievements and enduring legacy of one of the community's most accomplished athletes.
Installed at the site of the historic Old Ballfield home plate, where Ward first learned and played the game of softball, the memorial serves as a lasting tribute to a hometown athlete whose journey carried him from Bay Roberts to provincial, national, and international success.
The unveiling ceremony brought together members of the Gosse and Brown families, friends, former teammates, elected officials, and members of the community to reflect on Ward's extraordinary contributions to sport and the lasting impact he made both on and off the field.
Mayor Geoff Seymour welcomed those in attendance, speaking of Ward's legacy as an exceptional athlete, teammate, and friend, and the significance of recognizing him at the place where his athletic journey began. Family members, former teammates, coaches, and friends also shared memories celebrating Ward's dedication, sportsmanship, and passion for the games of softball and hockey.
Ward Gosse developed into one of Newfoundland and Labrador's most decorated fastpitch players, earning numerous league championships, provincial titles, national medals, international honours, and induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Softball Hall of Fame in 2012 and Sports Hall of Fame in 2019. He also enjoyed an outstanding 17-year senior hockey career, winning five Herder Memorial Championships and establishing himself as one of the province's premier defencemen.
The Town of Bay Roberts extends its sincere appreciation to the Gosse family and everyone who contributed to making this memorial possible. Located within the Community Gardens, the plaque now stands at the former home plate of the Old Ballfield, ensuring Ward Gosse's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of athletes for years to come.
