When we are giving updates on a wildfire, one of the first things you hear is how big it is.

Those numbers can sound massive, hundreds, thousands, even hundreds of thousands of hectares. It’s easy to imagine that all of that is actively on fire.

But here’s the thing, the size is the outline of the whole area the fire has touched. Inside that outline some spots are still burning, and others are just blackened ground where the flames have already passed.

We track and provide the size based on the outline, or “fire perimeter,” because we want everyone to know where the fire’s edge is, and stay well away. Even after fire has stopped actively burning, these areas can continue to smoulder and are not immediately safe.

You can also think of it like a colouring book, the size in hectares is the whole page, but the flames are only colouring in certain spots right now. A fire might be 100 hectares, but at the moment maybe only 10 are actually burning.

The photo below shows how only some parts are currently burning but the size of the fire would also include the black areas you can see.

So if you hear the fire has grown, remember it doesn’t mean the entire area is on fire at once and doesn't tell the whole story.

Hi, neighbours. After yesterday's lightning-sparked fire just above Beasley, it's been suggested that the fire department could do a better job of keeping the community informed. That's easier said than done sometimes, as fires are dynamic and often difficult to predict (and in the early stages we may be busy dealing with the situation from an operational standpoint), but we'll work on it. In this case, we were monitoring the situation but the fire was actioned by BC Wildfire as it was outside our jurisdictional boundaries.

There are some good sources of information already available for everyone, from prevention to preparedness to monitoring the status of wildfires, and we've compiled a list for you here.

The Beasley Fire Department is staffed by volunteers. They are well trained and ready to help 24/7, but the fire hall itself is not manned. To report an emergency situation to us, please call 911.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is responsible for responding to wildfires on Crown land. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 (or *5555 from a cell phone).
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status/contact-channels/report-a-wildfire

The BCWS Southeast Fire Centre (Arrow Fire Zone) has crews based close by, at Shoreacres. They have always been incredibly fast to respond to fires in our area when they have personnel available.

For information on the status of individual fires, current burn bans etc, please download the BCWS app:
https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/bc-wildfire-service/id1477675008
They update the information regularly, although there is some lag as it can't reasonably be done in real time.

The RDCK activates an Emergency Operations Centre whenever there is a major emergency or disaster, and will issue evacuation alerts and orders as needed.

It's a good idea to be signed up for emergency alerts through the Voyent Alert system.

Here's a good resource for emergency preparedness:
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/emergency-management/preparedbc/guides-and-resources

Information on current fire bans and burning requirements in the Southeast Fire Centre can be found here:
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status/prevention/fire-bans-and-restrictions
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/environment/air-land-water/air/air-pollution/smoke-burning/regulations/openburningregulation
Note: currently only campfires 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide - or smaller - are permitted.

And finally, it would be difficult to overstate how crucial it is for homeowners to focus on the critically important work of FireSmarting your home ignition zone. There are grants available to help with the cost.

Hopefully this information is helpful. Be vigilant, stay safe!

We can’t help you if we can’t find you.

Is your civic address registered in the RDCK database to ensure emergency services can quickly find you and potential evacuations are efficient?

The RDCK is asking residents to be proactive and to confirm they have a correct address within the database. Check the RDCK Web Map and if your address does not appear in the map, 9-1-1 does not have your address and you should apply for one.

From now until the end of the year, the RDCK is offering a free address change for those residents who qualify.

Follow the link to learn more and how to apply for a free address change: https://www.rdck.ca/EN/meta/news/news-archives/2024-news-archive/free-9-1-1-addressing-initiative-offered-by-the-rdck.html?fbclid=IwY2xjawGQiOVleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHTlNLAjiwQFDd_nfliOuduTzGIF_O66Wz2gSaw6NDbcPUR1ffLSF32ajKA_aem_olXYKXI_5vzR-CQDETOrXA
