Town of Wabana Public Notices from The Town of Wabana

PUBLIC NOTICE:
Illegal Dumping Incident

The Town of Wabana has been made aware of a recent incident of illegal dumping, occurring just days after the largest community cleanup in our town’s history.

This behaviour is both disappointing and unacceptable.

Over the past six weeks, residents generously volunteered their time and dedicated countless hours to restoring and enhancing the beauty of our community. It is therefore disheartening to witness an act of illegal dumping so soon after such a remarkable community effort.

This incident has left Town Council and many members of our community frustrated and disappointed. The Town of Wabana is currently working with the appropriate authorities to investigate the matter.

The Town would like to remind residents that the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) has partnered with Crime Stoppers to help prevent illegal dumping throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Report Suspicious Activity
NL Crime Stoppers encourages the public to report any suspicious activity involving the improper disposal of waste, including crimes in progress and information regarding illegal dumping sites.

If you witness suspicious activity, please try to record the following information:

• Licence plate number
• Vehicle make and colour
• Location
• Time of day

All reports can be made anonymously, and you will not be required to testify in court.

To Report Illegal Dumping:

📞 1-800-222-8477

Addressing this issue requires the support of our community. We encourage residents to report any information that may assist authorities and to share this notice with others.

The Town of Wabana is also reviewing additional measures and resources to help prevent future incidents and protect the hard work that has gone into keeping our community clean, safe, and beautiful.

THANK YOU, BELL ISLAND 💙

Today, Bell Island made history.

We have just completed the largest community cleanup our island has ever seen, with more than 150 volunteers coming together to clean our trails, parks, public spaces, streets, and illegal dumpsites.

The pride, dedication, and community spirit shown throughout the month of May have been nothing short of extraordinary. Residents of all ages stepped forward to do their part, proving that when a community unites behind a common goal, remarkable things can happen.

With the Waste Recovery Facility now operating under the Town of Wabana, there is a renewed sense of hope, confidence, and pride across our community. People are seeing a waste management operation that works for Bell Island, and they are embracing the movement to keep our community clean and beautiful. This week alone, we provided residents with 48 hours of continuous access to the facility, demonstrating just how important this service is to our island.

Bell Island is setting a new standard for community pride and environmental stewardship. We are determined to become leaders in waste management across Newfoundland and Labrador.

And to the Tidy Towns competition — we see you, and we’re coming for you! 💪

A very special thank you goes to Community Coordinator Jackie Murphy and committee volunteer Cassie Yetman, whose hard work, leadership, and countless volunteer hours helped make this milestone event possible. Their dedication united our community, inspired participation, and proved that together we can achieve great things. Because of their efforts, records were broken, community spirit was strengthened, and confidence was restored that Bell Island can and will be a leader in waste management throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

We were also honoured to present Jackie Murphy with the Gerald Fowler Memorial Community Leadership Award, recognizing outstanding leadership and commitment to our community.

The award is named in memory of Gerald Fowler, a man remembered by so many for his passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to keeping Bell Island clean. Gerald spent countless hours working to improve our community and took great pride in ensuring our island remained a place we could all be proud of. His impact continues to be felt today.

In recognition of his legacy, the Town will dedicate Bell Island’s annual Community Cleanup Day to Gerald each year moving forward. It is a fitting tribute to a man whose leadership, volunteerism, and community pride continue to inspire us all.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the many local businesses and private donors who generously contributed prizes for our volunteers. Your support helped make this event even more special and demonstrated the strong community spirit that exists across Bell Island. A special thank you as well to the Boys and Girls Club for graciously allowing us to use your facility for this event.

The Town of Wabana remains committed to supporting community initiatives that create meaningful and lasting positive change. Together, through collaboration, volunteerism, and community pride, we will continue building a cleaner, stronger, and more vibrant Bell Island for generations to come.

Together, we are proving that community pride isn’t just a slogan—it’s a movement. And Bell Island’s best days are ahead of us. 💙♻️

The BIGGEST Community Cleanup in Bell Island history is taking place this Sunday, May 31! This event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

It’s not too late to join our movement to restore community pride in our beautiful Bell Island. Teams are still registering! You can register by contacting Jackie Murphy or by visiting the Bell Island Community Clean-Up page. Registering will increase your chances of winning the Community Clean Cup and several local prizes!

Let’s recognize the teams that have registered so far — see team photos in the pictures below!

This year, our community cleanup is heavily focused on cleaning up illegal dumpsites. While we will still be cleaning commonly visited areas, illegal dumpsites remain our top priority.

Illegal dumpsites are often located along walking and ATV trails, around the airstrip, in wooded areas, near ponds, on the back side of the island, at old campsites, and along beaches. Later this week, we will be sharing these locations with teams and asking each team to adopt an illegal dumpsite. On cleanup day, the Town will visit these sites and remove the garbage that has been collected. Please bag any items that can be bagged and leave heavier items for Town staff to dispose of.

Once your dumpsite has been cleaned up, please call 709-689-2113 with the details and location so we can arrange pickup.

Make sure to make your way back to Town Hall for the BBQ, sweet treats, awards, participation prizes, and a fun, pride-filled afternoon with Council, cleanup teams, and our sponsors.

Below is a list of all sponsors and teams taking part in and supporting this event!

What a great turnout — let’s keep the momentum going!!!

Public notice:

Over the last 12 months, our town has seen a significant increase in animal control incidents. These incidents vary in severity from low to high risk. The Town is seeking public input on the development of new regulations that hold pet owners accountable while improving public safety.

On numerous occasions, residents in our town have allowed their dogs to wander freely, trespass on private property, and enter commonly used public spaces without being under immediate control or on a leash. We would like to remind all pet owners that animals must always be tethered unless they are on the owner’s private property.

Failure to comply with the tethering regulation will result in tickets being issued by our by-law enforcement officer for first, second, and third offences. After a third offence, the animal may be transferred to an animal shelter for rehoming.

If a dog attacks another animal or a human, the incident may trigger a police investigation unless the owner voluntarily agrees to euthanize the animal involved in the attack.

We understand that animals can accidentally become loose, escape, or break free from leashes. This notice is not intended to target those isolated incidents, but rather the repeated occurrences involving the same dogs on a consistent basis.

Please forward all feedback regarding the proposed approach to addressing animal control concerns in our community to [email protected].

Thank you,
