Effective at 12 p.m. PDT on Thursday, May 7, Category 1, Category 2, and Category 3 open fires are prohibited across the Coastal Fire Centre. The exception is the Haida Gwaii Forest District, where Category 1 campfires are permitted.

These measures are being taken to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires associated with open burning activities.

This prohibition will remain in place until October 31, 2026, or until it is rescinded.

Always check with your local government before burning, as they may have their own prohibitions in place.

After a stretch of unseasonably cool and wet conditions that brought below-average wildfire activity, many regions of B.C. can expect a shift back to more typical summer weather this week.

Starting today, hot, dry weather with a chance of dry lightning is forecast across southern regions, from the Coast through the southern Interior to the Rocky Mountains. This weather pattern will dry out forest fuels and potentially bring dry lightning, which is a recipe for new wildfire starts.

So, what should you do?

Thanks to fall-like conditions, widespread rain and a decreased fire danger rating in the Coastal Fire Centre, Category 2 (backyard) and Category 3 (industrial) open fire prohibitions will be lifted as of 12 p.m., noon, PDT on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, within the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction. The Category 1 (campfire) prohibition was previously lifted on August 28, 2024.

While the fire danger rating risk has declined on the coast, the public is asked to use caution with open fire use and to ensure burning is done in a safe and responsible manner in accordance with regulations. Before lighting any fire, check with local government authorities to see if any local burning restrictions are in place.

The campfire prohibition will be lifted in all regions of the Coastal Fire Centre area beginning 12:00 noon, Pacific Daylight Time (PST), on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

Although the fire danger has declined in the Coastal Fire Centre due to recent rainfall and cooler, more seasonal temperatures, the public is strongly encouraged to continue exercising extreme caution with any campfire. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that burning is done in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with regulations. Before lighting any fire, check with local government authorities to see if any local burning restrictions are in place.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited, including the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, burn barrels, burn cages and air curtain burners. These restrictions will remain in place until October 31, 2024, or until the Order is rescinded.

With the increased risk of new wildfire starts from current and forecast weather conditions, a province-wide campfire prohibition will take effect at 12 p.m. (noon) PDT on Friday, July 12, 2024, with the exception of Haida Gwaii Forest District.

These prohibitions are being enacted to help prevent human-caused wildfires and to protect public safety. The process for deciding whether to implement a campfire prohibition is complex and may differ from one part of the province to another, depending on local conditions.
