CVRD News: Complete Fire Ban Remains in Place for the Comox Valley ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The Comox Valley fire departments will remain having a complete fire ban in place over the May long weekend. Local bylaws allow fire departments to keep bans in place regardless of Coastal Fire Centreโ€™s recommendations.

โ€œThe Comox Valley continues to experience dry conditions and itโ€™s important to do our part in reducing wildfire risk. Protecting our communities is our top priority which is why we are keeping the complete fire ban in place,โ€ explains Bruce Green, Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) Regional Rural Fire Chief. โ€œThe CVRD and our regional partners are continuing with a zero tolerance for fires of any kind. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community safe from the threat of wildfire.โ€

The following area fire departments are involved in the complete fire ban:
โ€ข Comox Fire Rescue
โ€ข Courtenay Fire Department
โ€ข Denman Island Fire Rescue
โ€ข F***y Bay Volunteer Fire Department
โ€ข Hornby Island Fire Rescue
โ€ข Merville Fire Department
โ€ข Mount Washington Fire Department
โ€ข Oyster River Fire Rescue
โ€ข Ships Point Volunteer Fire Department
โ€ข Union Bay Fire Rescue

The complete fire ban does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or portable campfire devices that use briquettes, liquid, or gaseous fuel, provided they are CSA or ULC approved, and the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

To further reduce wildfire risk in the Comox Valley, a smoking ban continues to be enforced in all CVRD parks and all fire rings will remain removed from designated parks. For a complete list of our parks, visit www.comoxvalleyrd.ca/parks.

We want to thank our wonderful community for volunteering their properties to allow us to run a very successful Engine Boss course. 50 firefighters from 12 fire departments participated in the valuable training. This training will allow firefighters to safely and effectively respond to wildfires within our communities and the province. A special thank you to DC Thomas who put in countless hours organizing this important training.
We would like to remind you that if you are going to have campfires or beach fires, that you constantly monitor them and ensure they are completely extinguished with water before you leave.

CVRD Advisory: Firefighting Course Taking Place in Community on May 2

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and surrounding fire departments would like to make the public aware of a firefighting course taking place in the community to help train for wildfire scenarios.

The โ€œEngine Bossโ€ course will be taking place on Saturday, May 2 from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm and will feature approximately 15 fire department vehicles. These vehicles will be driving around with lights on in the following areas:

โ€ข Macauley Road
โ€ข Saratoga Beach
โ€ข Glenmore Road
โ€ข Catherwood Road
โ€ข Miracle Beach
โ€ข Staging location will be Saratoga Speedway to start (roughly 8:00 am) and the Miracle Beach Park parking lot around the lunch hour.

There will be no emergency as part of this exercise/course. Please use caution if you encounter these firefighting trucks in the area.

This is a good reminder to use caution this weekend and moving forward during the spring months. As temperatures are beginning to climb and warm weather is becoming more regular, itโ€™s important to consider the conditions and do what you can to reduce fire activity.
