If you smell smoke pay attention. If you see visible smoke or fire, call 9-1-1 and report it. Do not call emergency responders for information or updates.

Not to long ago we shared a bulletin from Office of the Fire Marshall regarding the use of Fire Blankets and how they are not approved in Canada.

Yesterday we responded to a call within the Village where a Fire Blanket was used. As you can tell by the picture below, the fire was not smothered by the blanket and in turn had holes burned into it. In return, the homeowner poured a whole box of baking soda in their oven resulting in the fire being smothered.

Yesterday’s call could have been much worse without their quick actions.

HFD wants to remind residents about the use of Fire Blankets. As an alternative, please equip your home with the appropriate fire extinguishers and try to ensure you have baking soda within your kitchen for potential kitchen fires.

At this time, we also want to remind residents to ensure you have working smoke detectors.
