August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day

Bowen Island Municipality is proud to support the North Shore Purple Chair Campaign, a community initiative that raises awareness of the toxic drug crisis, honours those we have lost, and helps reduce stigma around substance use.

As part of ongoing efforts to improve access to emergency resources, a Nasal Naloxone Kit is now available for public emergency use at the AED station in the Library parking lot. Free Naloxone Kits are also available through the Bowen Island Community Health Centre.

Ferry Drop-Off Stall Closure

The ferry drop-off stall on Cardena Road will be closed on Monday, August 31, 2026, to accommodate tree work in the area.

Work is expected to begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until approximately 4:00 p.m.

Access to the sidewalk may also be affected.

Please allow extra time if you are planning to pick up or drop off someone during this period. Please follow the instructions of all signage and on-site flaggers.

Off-Road Vehicle Prohibition Lifted for Bowen Island

The prohibition of off-road vehicles on Crown Land that has been in place since early-August has been lifted, effective at noon on Friday, August 28, 2026.

While conditions have improved, we urge recreators to remain vigilant and follow all wildfire prevention regulations when engaging in any activity that could spark a wildfire.

If you smell smoke, or are concerned about a fire near you, please call 911 immediately.

Mayor (1 to be elected)
Councillor (6 to be elected)
Islands Trust Trustee (2 to be elected)

Nomination Period runs from September 1, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. through September 11, 2026 at 4:00 p.m.

Emergency Preparedness: Back to School Preparedness

Talking to kids about emergencies isn’t easy, but avoiding the topic doesn’t make it go away.
The more they know in advance, the more likely they’ll respond safely and calmly.

Start with the basics: discuss the hazards that could happen in your community and what to do if one occurs while they’re at school.

Walk through your home emergency plan so they know who to call and how you’ll reunite.

And remember, kids being kids, they’ll probably ask you to repeat yourself. Be patient, answer their questions and keep the conversation going.

Garbage Collection Reminders

A few friendly reminders to help keep collection day running smoothly:

➡️ Please make sure your garbage can is secure. A couple of crisscrossed bungee cords can do a great job of keeping lids in place.

➡️ If a can tips over and garbage is scattered, collection crews are unable to clean it up on service day.

➡️ Remember to have your cans out on time and placed in a visible location so they can be easily collected.

➡️ If you use a shared collection area with neighbouring homes, please make sure your receptacle is clearly marked with your address.

➡️ If you have a second can, be sure the address decal is attached to that one as well.

➡️ Using a garbage container for yard trimmings? Please add a Yard Trimmings/Green Can sticker to the container. Stickers are available at the Recycling Depot.

A Development Variance Permit application has been submitted for the paving and expansion of the existing parking area for Crippen Regional Park, next to Snug Cove Field and the picnic shelters. This work will expand the capacity of the parking area from 24 to 27 spaces, and will involve the removal of 9 trees.
