When we get the call, Clarington firefighters are ready for it all! 🧑‍🚒

Lithium-ion batteries can create fast, intense fires. They’re often found in everyday items, like phones, laptops, e-bikes, e-scooters, power tools and even battery-powered lawn mowers.

Before you plug in tonight, Firefighter Steven from our Newcastle station and Firefighter Captain Eric from our Courtice station have two simple tips to help protect your family and home:

🔋 Charge devices on a hard, flat surface
🌙 Avoid overnight charging whenever possible

Battery fires can develop quickly and require specialized response. As our community grows and changes, Clarington Emergency and Fire Services continues to invest in training and equipment to ensure firefighters are prepared for evolving emergencies—from battery fires and incidents in multi-storey buildings to specialized rescue situations and more.

What would your child do if they saw a firefighter in full gear during an emergency? 👨‍🚒

It's so important to help the youth in our community become familiar with first responders before an emergency happens.

This morning, campers from P.R.Y.D.E. Learning Centres visited our station in Newcastle to learn about fire safety and interact with firefighters in full bunker gear! 🚒

Using extension cords every day can increase wear and create potential fire hazards. Avoid running cords under carpets or through doorways, and always plug major appliances directly into wall outlets.

Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms provide early warning and can give you and your family valuable time to get out safely. Volunteer Firefighter Melanie from our Enniskillen station wants you to:

🚨 Test your alarms regularly
🔋 Replace batteries as needed

When an alarm sounds, your job is to get out. Our job is to go in.

That's why Clarington continues to invest in firefighter safety. Clarington has been adding new gear-cleaning equipment that helps remove harmful contaminants from protective gear after emergency calls, helping to protect those who protect us.

If you live on a smaller residential property, you cannot have a recreational outdoor fire or fire pit. To be permitted, your property must meet the minimum safe distance standard of 7.5 metres in all directions from lot lines, fences, structures, trees, bushes, and combustibles such as a deck. 🔥❌

Carbon monoxide is an invisible, tasteless, odourless gas that can be deadly if it builds up indoors. If you have an attached garage or appliances that use natural gas, propane, oil, or wood, Ontario's Fire Code requires CO alarms on every level of your home and outside every sleeping area.
