Last week, our friends at Sunrise Developmental Support Services stopped by our station in Bowmanville to learn about our role in the community and tour the hall! πŸš’

They had the opportunity to learn about our fire trucks, get hands-on experience with tools on board, see our suppression staff in full bunker gear and even tour inside our truck. πŸͺ›

Thank you for stopping by! β˜€οΈ

Thanksgiving can be a busy timeβ€”preparing dishes and getting ready for family and friends. πŸ¦ƒπŸ‚ With so much happening in the kitchen, it can be easy to step away or get distracted.

When cooking on the stovetop, stay in the kitchen and keep your attention on the food. Never leave a pan unattendedβ€”even for a short time.

If you need to step away from the kitchen, turn off the stove and take the pan off the heat. Unattended cooking can quickly lead to a fire.

Keep batteries away from both heat and moisture. β˜€οΈπŸ’§

Store lithium-ion batteries and devices in a cool, dry location out of direct sunlight. Exposure to excessive heat or moisture can damage batteries, affect their performance and increase the risk of overheating or failure.

Safe storage is a simple step that helps protect your devices, your property, and most important, your family. πŸ‘ͺ

Bed for sleeping. πŸ›οΈ
Not for charging. πŸ”‹

Never charge lithium-ion battery-powered devices on a bed, couch, or under your pillow. Soft surfaces can trap heat, increasing the risk of overheating, battery failure, and fire.

Instead, charge devices on a hard, flat surface and keep an eye on them while they're plugged in. A simple change in where you charge can make a big difference in keeping your home safe.

Battery safety isn't just about charging. It's also about where you charge.πŸ”Œ

Many people store and charge e-bikes, e-scooters, and other battery-powered devices near doorways and hallways. If a fire occurs, these devices can block exits and delay evacuation when every second counts.

Keep all exits and escape routes clear to help ensure a safe and quick evacuation during an emergency. 🏠

Keeping your family safe means preparing for hazards you can't always see. πŸ‘€

Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer because it has no smell, taste, or colour. Make sure your home has the required CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas.

A full battery doesn't mean it should stay plugged in. ⚠️

Overcharging, charging overnight, or leaving devices plugged in after they're fully charged can increase the risk of battery damage and overheating. Get into the habit of unplugging devices once they're fully charged and using only the charger recommended by the manufacturer.

Safe charging today can help prevent a fire tomorrow. πŸ“±

Battery safety starts with smart purchasing decisions. πŸ”‹

Always buy certified lithium-ion batteries and chargers from reputable manufacturers, and use only the charging equipment your device was designed to use. Off-brand and counterfeit products may lack important safety features and protections.

When it comes to lithium-ion batteries, the safest choice is the certified choice. βœ…
