🍁 HONOURING CANADIAN COURAGE🍁

On 17 November 2007, in the mountains of Afghanistan, Captain Isabelle Marie-Ève Bégin proved that split-second precision can be the difference between life and death.

When Reconnaissance Platoon was caught in a deadly insurgent ambush, Capt. Bégin's technical mastery in coordinating and calling artillery fire gave her platoon the window they needed to withdraw safely. Her calm, professional ex*****on under fire didn't just save lives — it helped secure mission success.

🎯 Why artillery mattered so much in Afghanistan:
Canada's gunners were the backbone the infantry could count on. When troops were pinned down and grid references went out over the radio, the front line trusted that fire would land exactly where — and exactly when — it was needed. That accuracy wasn't luck. It was relentless training, disciplined math, and total professionalism, mission after mission.

Soldiers on the ground knew: call it in, and the guns would answer. That dependability turned potential tragedy into safe withdrawal, time and again.

For her skill, composure, and dedication that day, Capt. Bégin was Mentioned in Dispatches — a recognition of exceptional service in the presence of the enemy.

Brigadier Donald Robert Agnew CBE

Commander Order of the British Empire

Brigadier Agnew has had a long and distinguished military career which started in 1916 on being commissioned from Royal Military College. He served in France from June 1918 to March 1919 and on his return to Canada remained in the Permanent Active Militia in which he held a variety of responsible appointments. Shortly after the outbreak of this war, while holding the rank of Major, Brigadier Agnew was appointed Chief Instructor of the Canadian Artillery Training Centre in Winnipeg and subsequently was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel to command the centre. In September 1940 he was given command of 14 Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, which he took overseas, staying with this unit until promoted Colonel to command 1 Canadian Artillery Reinforcement Unit in June 1942, followed in July 1942 by his promotion to Brigadier to command 1st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade. After two years in this command he returned to Canada and has held the appointment of Director-General of Anti-Aircraft Artillery for one year and has been District Officer Commanding Military District No.7 since August 1945. Brigadier Agnew has at all times inspired those under him by his own devotion to duty, and has always interested himself in their welfare in addition to demanding a very high standard of training and discipline. His Anti-Aircraft Brigade played a very useful and active role in the defence of Great Britain in its hours of greatest need.

42nd Field’s Gnr Waldner recently returned from deployment on Operation PALACI, the Canadian Armed Forces’ support for the Parks Canada program to control avalanches in Rogers Pass, B.C. From November to April, the CAF sends two groups of 15 to 20 Regular and Reserve Forced artillery members to bring down small avalanches in the pass before larger ones occur naturally. They use 105-mm explosive shells to trigger safe, controlled avalanches.

l'artilleur Waldner, du 42e Régiment d'artillerie de campagne, vient de rentrer d'une mission dans le cadre de l'opération PALACI, le soutien apporté par les Forces armées canadiennes au programme de Parcs Canada visant à contrôler les avalanches au col Rogers, en Colombie-Britannique. De novembre à avril, les Forces armées canadiennes envoient deux groupes de 15 à 20 membres de l'artillerie de l'armée régulière et de la réserve afin de déclencher de petites avalanches dans le col avant que des avalanches plus importantes ne se produisent naturellement. Ils utilisent des obus explosifs de 105 mm pour déclencher des avalanches contrôlées en toute sécurité.

Earlier this month, 1 RCHA exercised their historic Freedom of the City in Brandon, MB. Accompanied by armoured vehichles and towed howitzers, more than 100 soldiers paraded towards City Hall, where LCol Jordan Beatty was greeted by Mayor Jeff Fawcett.

This time-honoured ceremony reflects not only military professionalism, but also the strong connection between our soldiers and the citizens who support them. UBIQUE!

Plus tôt ce mois-ci, le 1 RCHA a exercé son droit de cité historique à Brandon, au Manitoba. Accompagnés de véhicules blindés et d’obusiers tractés, plus d’une centaine de soldats ont défilé vers l’hôtel de ville, où le Lcol Jordan Beatty a été accueilli par le maire Jeff Fawcett.

Cette cérémonie traditionnelle souligne non seulement le professionnalisme militaire, mais aussi le lien étroit qui existe entre nos soldats et les citoyens qui les appuient. UBIQUE!
