๐ŸŒ‰ Silver Bridge Rehabilitation Update

An important step has been completed at Silver Bridge.
Crews have safely lifted the 100-year-old bridge off its supports to complete key repairs.

This was a complex job that required careful planning, engineering expertise, and specialized equipment.

To do this, crews built a temporary support system using massive steel beams on each side of the bridge. Large concrete counterweights, weighing more than 160,000 lbs per side - about the same as 12 adult elephants - were used to stabilize the system.

Eight powerful jacks were used to lift the 430,000 lb steel truss about 50 mm off its bearings over three days. That is like lifting a stack of 100 pickup trucks, slowly and carefully, just enough to allow crews to work underneath and at the ends of the bridge.

Now that the bridge is safely supported, crews can repair and replace damaged steel, complete concrete repairs below the bridge, and install new bridge bearings.

Once this work is complete, the bridge will be carefully lowered onto its new bearings. The next stages of work will include:
โ€ข Deck repairs and expansion joint replacement
โ€ข More steel repairs and coating
โ€ข New guiderail
โ€ข Waterproofing, paving, and line painting

Thank you for your continued patience as crews work to safely restore the Silver Bridge and the surrounding area.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Know Where it Goes: PROPANE TANKS
โœ” Answer: HAZARDOUS WASTE!

BBQ season is here โ€” and when your propane tank runs out, here's where they go๐Ÿ‘‡

WHERE TO TAKE THEM: 3 Easy Options!
๐Ÿญ Brendar Environmental ๐Ÿ“ 1122 Rosewarne Dr, Bracebridge. Drop off your tanks here year-round!

๐Ÿš› Hazardous Waste Events: Keep an eye out for hazardous waste drop-off events at a transfer station near you - a convenient option if Bracebridge isn't close by!

๐Ÿ”„ Propane Exchange Programs: Many local retailers offer propane tank exchange programs - swap your empty tank for a full one and let them handle the rest! Look for exchange cages at hardware stores, grocery stores, and gas stations near you.

Why can't they go in the metal pile?
Even "empty" propane tanks contain residual gas that can be extremely dangerous if punctured or compressed. Proper disposal keeps our waste workers, community, and environment safe.

This includes:
โœ… Small camping/BBQ cylinders
โœ… Standard BBQ tanks

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’ Climate Corner August 2026: Staying Prepared - Climate Resources for Muskoka Residents and Cottagers

This year has already shown how changing climate conditions can impact communities across Muskoka. From spring flooding and changing water levels to smoke from forest fires in Northern Ontario affecting local air quality, residents, cottagers and visitors have all experienced the effects.

The District has two extremely helpful resources through the Muskoka GeoHub that can help residents and cottagers stay informed and prepared:

While the increased impacts of floods and forest fires due to climate change affect all of us, taking action is one way to build more resilience and feel empowered.

๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’ช Caring for Children Is a Shared Community Responsibility.

The engineer who designs tomorrowโ€™s ideas, the teacher who guides future generations, the nurse who cares for our community, the leaders who will shape Muskokaโ€™s future. They all started here.

Every adult was once a child, and every child is part of our communityโ€™s future. The children growing up in Muskoka today will become the people who care for others, solve problems, and lead our community.

The early years help children learn, grow, and build skills for life. When we support them, we support our whole community.

This is why everybodyโ€™s child is yours.

๐Ÿšง Safety Improvements Coming to Muskoka Road 118 West

Changes are coming to Muskoka Road 118 West between Balls Drive and Westmall Road to improve the current set-up while continuing to support safer travel through the area.

Temporary concrete barriers installed in early 2025 will be replaced with a concrete curb and asphalt median. The updated median will continue to restrict left turns while the District completes long-term planning for the corridor.

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Oversized items donโ€™t belong on roadsides or in nature.

Though this imagery is not today's reality, it is an exaggerated depiction of what could happen if action is not taken.

Weโ€™re already seeing the impacts of illegal dumping across Muskoka and puts strain on our environment and community resources-and cleanup costs affect us all.

Which Muskoka do you want to see? Thereโ€™s a right place for large, renovation, and special waste.
