Today is International Wild Salmon Day.

Wild salmon are at the heart of healthy ecosystems, connecting rivers, forests, wildlife, and communities across the Pacific coast.

At Cheakamus Centre, students learn about the salmon life cycle through hands-on experiences in our spawning channels and hatchery, building a deeper understanding of the importance of stewardship and habitat conservation.

Thank you to the Pacific Salmon Foundation for supporting this work and helping inspire the next generation of salmon stewards.

One of our favourite traditions to come out of the Cheakamus Centre Open House is the naming of the Cheakamus Bird of the Year.

This year’s winner, with 133 votes cast, is the Great Blue Heron.

These incredible birds are a common sight along the Cheakamus River and surrounding streams. Despite their large size, they only weigh about 5–6 pounds thanks to their hollow bones, and they can even hunt day or night thanks to excellent low light vision.

A huge thank you to Mark Thompson for his beautiful photo and for once again leading the 2026 Open House Bird of the Year competition!

A beautiful start to the 2026 wedding Season here! Congrats to Karly & Alex 🥂 • .photography What an amazing start to the season in April at with Karly & Alex.

It’s been a bit of a wild spring around here. Somehow summer already feels in full swing in Squamish. The forests are exploding with green, the sun’s been out nonstop, and we already have a fire ban..?

Arrival days are a pretty special time here at Cheakamus Centre.

There’s something magical about watching students step into a Coast Salish teaching longhouse for the very first time, settling in for the evening, and beginning to connect with place, with each other, and with the experience ahead.

If you’ve never had the opportunity to spend the night in a teaching Coast Salish longhouse, take it from us - it’s an experience that stays with you.

Our favourite day of the year is almost here!

Cheakamus Centre Open House returns this Sunday, May 3, and we can’t wait to welcome our community back onto the land.

Join us for a free, family friendly day to explore forest trails, visit the Coast Salish Teaching Longhouse, meet our farm animals, and take part in hands on activities and art stations. Enjoy live music throughout the day, connect with local vendors, and take part in releasing salmon fry at the hatchery.

This day is all about connection. To nature, to community, and to place. It is a chance to slow down, step outside, and experience what makes Cheakamus so special.

Sunday, May 3
10:30am to 3:00pm
2170 Paradise Valley Road, Brackendale

We hope to see you there!

Spring is unfolding across Cheakamus Centre, a reminder of the living systems that connect us all. From forest floor to flowing river, each part of this landscape plays a role in sustaining life.

Connection to place is where care begins. When people, and especially youth, have the opportunity to experience the land firsthand, they begin to understand its value and the importance of protecting it.

Today on Earth Day, and every day, we are grateful to do this work; helping foster meaningful connections to the land that inspire stewardship for generations to come.

We’re still thinking about the incredible groups who spent their Spring Break with us at Cheakamus Centre!

From Rundle College’s retreat, to Waterlution’s Youth for Resilient Communities program, to the Starfish Youth Environmental Changemakers Annual Summit, each group brought a powerful energy rooted in curiosity, connection, and a desire to make a difference.

Groups like these remind us why this place matters. The ideas shared, the relationships built, and the leadership growing here ripple far beyond our site.

Thank you to for capturing this moment from the Starfish Summit.

It’s been a busy and wonderful start back after winter break here at Cheakamus Centre with the return of our Grade 6 Outdoor School programs and visiting schools back on site. This week, we’ve loved welcoming students from Crofton House and getting back into the rhythm of learning, exploring, and connecting with nature.
